Hey, go figure — a kind of decent newspaper piece on the (allegedly) lone legislative lobbyist for humanism in the nation, lobbying the NY State Legislature. A reasonable, almost positive account of the good guys. I knew I shouldn’t have said anything nice about the Unitarians: The Tex-ass State Comptroller’s Office is now denying Unitarian Churches tax-exempt status because the “Unitarian church isn’t really a religious organization” since it “does not have one system of belief.” The Comptroller’s Office’s top lawyer says that “for any organization to qualify as a religion, members must have ’simply a belief in God, or gods, or a higher power’.”

According to the Unitarian Church, this is the first time — in this state or any other — that a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group’s religious philosophy.

According to the FBI, Ms. Williams is accused of killing 4-year-old Nailah Williams during an argument with the child about her behavior.

According to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Nailah had thrown a temper tantrum that Ms. Williams had tried to quell. The complaint states that Nailah refused to answer questions and continued to act out, leading Ms. Williams to grab her by the shoulders and shake her.

Ms. Williams “then began choking Nailah until Nailah urinated on herself and collapsed to the floor,” the complaint states. Angered, it continues, Ms. Williams “ordered Nailah to undress and proceeded to whip her about the lower body with a belt,” causing her to fall repeatedly.

Ms. Williams then allegedly ordered Nailah to the tub and sprayed her with hot and cold water from the showerhead; this caused Nailah to fall and hit her head twice in the tub, the complaint states.

Ms. Williams removed Nailah from the tub and the little girl was unresponsive; Ms. Williams then called her husband (listed as “D.W.” in the complaint) who instructed her to call 911, which she did, the complaint states.

Nailah died later that evening.
