Another “public life/square” rant, just because I’m feeling bitchy

So, in spite of my better judgement, I’m reading this piece of shit “review” from Salon of the books The End of Faith and The Twilight of Atheism. Don’t bother; it’s the same lame-ass “I’m, like, liberal, and evenhanded, but those Atheists are just nasty” that we’ve heard 132,677 times before. But again, we get the rhetorical question about the End of Faith author: “How exactly does Harris propose that we eliminate religion from public life in a democratic nation where the majority of citizens believe in God and 35 percent report that they believe the Bible to be the literal word of God?”

Now, I personally would like to eliminate religion from public life by showing that majority that they’re wrong, and thus eliminating it from private life too. But that’s another story. The point here is just that once again, we have the use of the “eliminate religion from (the) public life/square” accusation. What, did they all go to a weekend retreat to learn this slander? I personally don’t know of any atheists that rip crucifixes off necks, tear down crosses from churches, block access to houses of worship, or whatever. I am so fucking sick of the claim that we are trying to “force religion from public life” because we try to keep the KKKristians from using the power of the state to force us to fund, honor, and institutionalize their God-luvin’. I personally kind of enjoy a wacky streetcorner preacher — far more than most Xians, who tend to get real uncomfortable with it. And the ACLU and I am completely up for defending his right to speak his views “in the public square”.

Of course, I hear we drink the blood of Xian babies, too.
