Dumb-Ass Xian Morons
3 February 2005 by BobNo, it’s not the name of a new band that’s sweeping the nation (although that would be cool). It’s the name that refers to a class of self-absorbed “chosen” fuckheads that take more than enough time to focus on themselves and ignore the other people in the world and the shit they have to go through. (I mean, how could you NOT get pissed at people who talk like this?)
First, there was Star Jones from The View who gave us the following (thanks to Jane83 for the quote):
“I was in Thailand for my honeymoon just a month ago. Thank god the tsunami didn’t happen then. The Lord was looking out for me and I feel blessed.”
Which, fortunately, was recognized and ripped-up by Jon Stewart:
“God killed 160,000 people. Just because you weren’t there, that’s not him blessing. My guess is that was an oversight. Seriously how far up your own ass do you have to be? I was almost killed in the Kennedy assassination. Six months before that, I was in a convertible.”
And now we have Terrell Owens talking about his healing condition:
“God has blessed me,” T.O. said. “He is using me. If you don’t believe in miracles, then wait until Sunday.”
The Albany Times-Union has a nice reply:
Why God cares so that T.O. should play on Sunday seems curious. The same God who apparently subscribes to NFL Sunday Ticket also was a spectator when a quarter-million people were forever washed away, like water down a drain, by a tsunami. Were their lives not as valuable as the diamond stud earrings that Owens wore when he stood on the dais describing the miracle? Was their faith not as staunch as T.O.’s?Could any human being be so self-absorbed to believe that God watches silently as hijacked planes fell Twin Towers, yet takes an active role in making sure that a football player heals so he can play in the Super Bowl?
Or that He roots for the Eagles but tunes out the kids in hospital cancer wards?
But hey, it’s all about them, isn’t it. Dumb-ass shitheads. Ugh.

Hi Bob,
I don’t know who is more angered at the absurd nature of the comments by these two so-called “Christians” you (an avowed atheist) or me (a Christian). Neither of these comments is representative of biblical Christianity (meaning the attitudes revealed by such comments are contradictory to the teaching of the Bible). I have no way of knowing whether either one of these people is, in fact, a Christian or not. It is entirely possible. Certainly Christians are just as capable of making stupid comments as anyone else (I’m quite good at it at times). But stupid comments by Christians that contradict biblical teaching is no indictment against biblical Christianity (it’s no endorsement, either). Bottom line: You can’t lump all Christians into the “stupid” group for the comments made by Terrell Owens any more than you can lump all African-Americans in that group because Owens also happens to be black.
I don’t think it’s wrong for a person who was in the tsunami-affected area to think, “My gosh, I was almost a part of that tragedy.” Any of us probably would have had similar thoughts. I do question the wisdom of directing focus on yourself in light of the scope of what happened.
Your post would probably more accurately be filed under, “People can be sooo stupid.”

You can’t lump all Christians into the “stupid” group for the comments made by Terrell Owens any more than you can lump all African-Americans in that group because Owens also happens to be black. — But I wasn’t doing that, Frank. If you read the post, it says that I referring to a class of people who do this.
I don’t think it’s wrong for a person who was in the tsunami-affected area to think, “My gosh, I was almost a part of that tragedy.” Any of us probably would have had similar thoughts. — Again, this isn’t the point. The point isn’t about thinking what you say here, but about focusing on the “chosen” nature of what happened: “Wow, God spared me; I must be blessed.” Both of these dumb-asses look at God as specifically granting something to them, and that’s the problem (not just thinking “that could have been me”).

You’d think if God was really rooting for the Eagles, that maybe he could have made them win.

Or maybe he just had money on them, so only needed them to cover.

Sunday Carnival
I’ve just finished browsing this week’s Carnival of the Godless over at Science and Politics. It’s a somewhat smaller collection, but still a good one. They included my pitiful attempt at humor with my Interview with God post. I…

Tom the Troll: what makes you think posting a comment on something this old would keep you hidden away?
You believe in Satan? I always find that even more hilarious than believing in gawd. Do you believe in fairies and magic butt gremlins, too?

Wait, Sean….magic butt gremlins aren’t real??? Then who has been poking me in my no-no chute all these years at night?
