Boy, 7, Suspected in Tot’s Beating Death

A 7-year-old boy beat his baby half-sister to death with his fists, feet and a two-by-four because he was jealous of the attention the girl was receiving and because she would not stop crying, police said Wednesday. [...] Seven-month-old Jayza Laney Simms was dead on arrival at the hospital where her parents rushed her.

Man, where were the parents when this happened? Praying?

Bob, why not save yourself the trouble of cutting and pasting and just link directly to the New York Post? I assume this post is meant to be yet more evidence of innocent suffering and thus no god, but merely listing horrors has nothing to do with the blog’s mission statement, does it? Isn’t it enough to know that wars and crimes exist generally to posit the “problem of evil”?

With the intelligent design debate, the stem cell vote and perhaps veto, Benedict’s new robes and new job, and any number of interesting/disturbing religious current events in our societies, can’t we find more pertinent items to bat around on this site?

…but merely listing horrors has nothing to do with the blog’s mission statement, does it? — I thought it did, especially when I read the first part of what we do. Call it a rant, I guess.

Isn’t it enough to know that wars and crimes exist generally to posit the “problem of evil”? — Well, I guess I just like to try to point out how subtle these things can be, and how specific details can cause complications in the classic explanations. I just like the logical geography, and trying things from different perspectives.

With the intelligent design debate, the stem cell vote and perhaps veto, Benedict’s new robes and new job, and any number of interesting/disturbing religious current events in our societies, can’t we find more pertinent items to bat around on this site? — Well, I try to do both, I guess, and I would never want to come off as claiming that the other stuff didn’t exist or isn’t important. I just have this thing for the POE, since so much rides on it.

There are too many problems with this story. One is that the parents left him alone with (apparently) a crying baby. If some of us have a hard time coping with a crying baby, how can we expect a 7 year old to handle that. Midnight??? Any 7 year old up at midnight with an infant and his parents outside is clearly being neglected. Further children who are violent have either witnessed violence first hand or are acting out emotional issues…in either case it seems that the parents have not been competent enough to troubleshoot and get the child the help he needs.

I dont like how this story is written or framed. I really have contempt for the media sometimes. By putting the child at the focus and framing him as a killer is really unfair. The article doesnt at all question the integrity of the parents. What a stigma for this child to carry for the rest of his life. Irresponsible parents, irresponsible society.

The problem I have with the whole situation is, the knew how insanely jealous he was about the attention she got, so why did they go outside and leave him alone with the other two children?

The comment someone put about the violence, do you watch tv? Every time you turn it on unless it is strictly children’s programs like Sesame Street, Barney or Dragon Tales there is some type of violence. How many times has Wiley Coyote been hit on the head with a boulder or been blown up.

God is NOT for suckers, he is for the true believers.

“God is NOT for suckers, he is for the true believers.”

Well, both. The TB’s are just a subset of the suckers. See, we don’t really disagree at all!

Hey Juliet, God was there, and didn’t help the child find a path that didn’t involve murder. Even if the parents have some blame (and I don’t know what to say about that), didn’t the big, powerful, good, caring (but invisible) daddy right there in the room have any responsibility to help one of his treasured babies not kill another one of his vulnerable and precious babies? Heck, I’d have some responsibility to do that, even if I were just an uncle, or a third cousin twice removed, or a random stranger, frankly.

Once again, we change the topic to refuse to hold God to even the most minimal standard of morality that we expect even such flawed beings as ourselves to live up to.

I would love to chime in, but this web site never lets me. I must be evil.

Just because something like this happens, doesn’t mean that christ wasn’t apart of their lives. The Lord lets things happen to use for a reason. May the family took thier focus off of him and sometime he does something tragic to get someone’s attention. Trust me, I know. For whoever said “God is for sucker” you’ll be the first one calling on him when something goes wrong in your life. I pray for you, and the family that’s dealing with this. God bless you guys.

  10. John:

Well OK then, as long as God has a reason for all the horrible shit he does and allows, then I guess it must be all right. Because any time anybody has a reason, that makes it OK.

Wow. So, killing for one’s amusement would be wrong, but killing to get attention is okay? There are definitely some people who’s attention I could use. The value of the life of the child was his parents attention–it had no inherent value that was violated by his cruel death? Wow.

For whoever said “God is for sucker” you’ll be the first one calling on him when something goes wrong in your life.

Why would I? I wouldn’t call on Santa if I were poor and in need of presents. I wouldn’t call on the tooth fairy if I were in need of dental work. Why would I call on God?

    This is my favorite:

If you ask a Xian if they know the mind of god, they will induitably say “no”. If you do not know the mind of god, then how can you know he does everything “for a reason”? God does “something tragic” to get someone’s attention?? How do you know? Provide evidence.

What I want to know is if the parents were Christians? If they were Christians that boy most likely would not have killed that baby. Anyways, the parents should have been watching both the baby and the little boy.
