Wonderful Life

28 July 2005

Some cool Darwin quotes I found while getting rid of some files:

Why is thought being a secretion of brain more wonderful than gravity as a property of matter? It is only our arrogance, and our admiration of ourselves.

And, of course, the classic deserves mention:

[B]ut I own that I cannot see as plainly as others do, and as I should wish to do, evidence of design and beneficence on all sides of us. There seems to me too much misery in the world. I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created the Ichneumonidae with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of caterpillars or that a cat should play with mice.

If you’ve never seen either of these things, you should. It’s totally fucked up.movies jpegs preview pornographyrocki movies roadsmovie scary themessex clip movieshop movie girlporn movies spankingstudent bodies moviemovies free sylvia saint Map

Nice One

26 July 2005

Just gotta love the Brit media when it comes to religion. Check out a great phrase in a commentary piece from The Guardian concerning the religious freaks who bombed the tube:

All religions are prone to it, given the right circumstances. How could those who preach the absolute revealed truth of every word of a primitive book not be prone to insanity?

Nice. Go read the full commentary here.

Just a Clarification

26 July 2005

Just read an article called Scouting and America and came across something that probably is indicative of a common misconception about religion, oppression, and the state:

…[I]t is unfortunate that the Boy Scouts of America has been under sustained attack by Left-wing activists in recent years. The BSA is a private organization that, as the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed in 2000, has the constitutionally protected right to maintain its own code of honor. Specifically, the BSA may exclude those who insist on practicing atheism and homosexual behavior, which clearly violate the Scout Oath and Law.

Umm, as far as I know, all we did was pull their funding (as we should have). We never, like, outlawed the organization or anything. This seems to be the distinction lost on most people. As Ron previously posted, there is a clear difference between constraining religion and blocking the doors to places of worship or ripping crosses off the necks of believers. The first involves a legal understanding of pluralism and neutrality, the second involves intolerance.

Concerning the BSA, people are still free to join and practice their bigotry (along with knowing which bugs to eat, creating fires at convenient times, and tying very complicated knots). God Bless America.

UPDATE: This post has nothing to do with the recent deaths of four scout leaders.

PBS chat on Proto-Supreme Roberts and religion

26 July 2005

There’s a sensible enough chat at PBS’s Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly about Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts and religious issues before the court. A little defensive and apologistic, but lays out some of the changes he might bring.

Holy Warriors and Muppets

20 July 2005

Okay… I know I have to post more on my subject of how the American foreign policy of “bomb ‘em some more and they will leave us alone” plays right into the hands of holy warriors on both sides. But in the meantime, I was laughing my ass of this morning being reminded of this little gem. Remember when Evil Bert ended up in a genuine protest sign alongside Osama?

Any chance to laugh at extremist assholes is rare — usually overwhelmed by the latest outrage. Thought I’d bring this back to life for a few smirks. What’s even more hilarious is how that little jihadist to the left looks like he too is wondering how the hell that pissed off gay dom of a muppet got into his holy Photoshop collage.
