Teaching of Creationism Is Endorsed in New Survey

…[A] poll released yesterday found that nearly two-thirds of Americans say that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in public schools. The poll found that 42 percent of respondents held strict creationist views, agreeing that “living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.” In contrast, 48 percent said they believed that humans had evolved over time. But of those, 18 percent said that evolution was “guided by a supreme being,” and 26 percent said that evolution occurred through natural selection. In all, 64 percent said they were open to the idea of teaching creationism in addition to evolution, while 38 percent favored replacing evolution with creationism.

It seems the creationists were right about something: the wedge strategy will actually work if people already want to believe in creationism.

UC system sued for being against bad education

So, it’s come to this: “Christian Schools Bring Suit Against UC“. Sounds like the University of California system is not treating the anti-science and non-accredited “educations” given to kids via fundy and home-schooling with the honor and respect they think they deserve.

Christian Schools Bring Suit Against UC

…University of California admissions officials have been accused in a federal civil rights lawsuit of discriminating against high schools that teach creationism and other conservative Christian viewpoints.

Under a policy implemented with little fanfare a year ago, UC admissions authorities have refused to certify high school science courses that use textbooks challenging Darwin’s theory of evolution, the suit says. Other courses rejected by UC officials include “Christianity’s Influence in American History,” “Christianity and Morality in American Literature” and “Special Providence: American Government.” … UC’s board of admissions also advised the school that it would not approve biology and science courses that relied primarily on textbooks published by Bob Jones University Press and A Beka Books, two Christian publishers.

…(UC) spokeswoman Ravi Poorsina said she could not comment on its details. But she said the university had a sound legal right to set course requirements for incoming students. “What we’re doing is really for the benefit of the students,” she said. “These requirements were established after careful study by faculty and staff to ensure that students who come here are fully prepared with broad knowledge and the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed.”

P.Z. Myers over at Pharyngula, as usual, gets this right. As he puts it in “There ain’t nothin’ there!“,

…creationists are demanding that legitimate universities accept transfer credits from Christian schools’ “science” classes that use substandard textbooks and don’t meet the standards of the University of California. You really must take a look inside one of these Bob Jones University-quality textbooks: “The people who prepared this book have tried consistently to put the Word of God first and science second…If…at any point God’s Word is not put first, the authors apologize.”

Case closed.

Man, ya cant get away from it, can ya…

Church’s “Gay Cure”

“Homosexuality always comes out of a distorted view of oneself,” he said. So his mission in life is to uncross these wires with group therapy and strict behaviour rules aimed at driving out the “false images” homosexuals have of themselves. […] Mr Harwood came out of the programme believing himself “cured”. He dated a woman but the relationship fell apart and former impulses returned. He reached a crisis. “I just said ‘this is it’. God is nothing but a cosmic sadist. I sat in my bathroom with a carving knife, wondering whether it would be better to slit my wrists or cut off my genitals.”

Oh, yes, feel that love.

The Revealer has a nice, to the point critique of Newsweek’s recent cover piece on the “surge of spirituality in Amerkkka”, “In Search of the Spiritual“. As The Revealer puts it in “Spiritual, But Not Newsworthy“…

Newsweek’s “Spirituality” theme issue would barely merit mention as anything other than a crass attempt to peddle holy holy (a la the not one but two times Jesus has appeared on the magazine’s cover the last year, each time to herald breaking news of, uh, a 2,000-year-old religion) were it not for its passive-aggressive attempt to contain belief, religion, the divine, and the spiritual in a box built by Protestants…

Church: God Punishing GIs Over Gays

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) — Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq. […] The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps’ children, grandchildren and in-laws. […] The church members carried signs and shouted things such as “God hates fags” and “God hates you.”

Just gotta love Rev. Freddie.

I just had to bubble this up. Someone actually called the restaurant in Jersey that had the Jew comment.

Listen here.

I have been laughing for the last fifteen minutes.

Table for Jew

I think I need to call this restaurant and make a reservation. When they ask me my name, I’m gonna say “Jew Couple.”

Outrageous. From the New York Post… A rag I never read, but it was one of the few places I could find that had the whole story:

TABLE FOR ‘JEW’

By LEELA de KRETSER
New York Post

August 17, 2005 — Two diners on a date at a fancy Jersey Shore restaurant were furious when they saw the check β€” which listed their table as that of the “Jew Couple.”

Brooklynite Elliot Stein says he was shocked that a waitress at the Parkhill’s Waterfront Grill in Allenhurst printed the slur instead of a table number on his $36.75 bill.

As if that weren’t bad enough, the 23-year-old shoe buyer told The Post, the offensive phrase then turned up on his credit-card statement two weeks later.

“My grandfather went through all that in old-school Europe,” an angry Stein said yesterday. “But that happened more than 50 years ago. You don’t expect it to happen in 2005, especially when a lot of their money comes from our community.”

Stein, who has a vacation house in nearby Deal, N.J., said he was a regular at the waterfront establishment.

Relaxing at happy hour on a Friday night, July 8, he and his girlfriend of two years, Jennifer Cassin, had just finished their sushi and drinks.

When the check arrived, a startled Cassin picked it up and handed it to her boyfriend, saying, “What the hell is this?”

Along with the list of their orders was the printed phrase: “Jew Couple.”

Stein said he took the offensive bill and showed it to Jewish friends seated nearby who said they could not believe it.

When the group started questioning the manager, Stein said she simply told them there was nothing derogatory about the statement.

Stein said he was then asked to leave for making a fuss.

The restaurant’s general manager, Malia Wells, yesterday told The Post that the offending phrase was a matter of “poor judgment on the part of a bartender.”

The server, shown as Karina on Stein’s bill, has since “moved on,” Wells said. She would not say whether Karina was fired.

“We are a family restaurant, and we welcome everybody,” she said, adding that the words “Jew Couple” were never intended to be derogatory.

“We use it as a form of identity,” she said. She would not elaborate on what the restaurant does when there is more than one couple assumed to be Jewish at the restaurant.

Etzion Neuer, director of the New Jersey Anti-Defamation League, said the case was outrageous.

“The idea that a restaurant or any establishment is labeling customers by race and then printing it on their bill is unbelievable,” Neuer said.

“It doesn’t even say Jew-ish,” he pointed out. “It’s indefensible.”
