The corpses were wrapped in plastic and concealed inside statues of Christian icons, which were smashed open. Colombian police chief Gen Jord Alirio Varon said the four- to five-month-old foetuses could have been intended for use in Satanic rituals. Gen Varon said the foetuses were found alongside crucifixes and medals.

Could be, I suppose. What immediately popped into my mind when I saw this story was “for use in pro-life protests.”

No kidding. They were inside Christian icons with crucifixes next to them. What’s so Satanic about that?
And how many active, violent Satanists, other than the occasional loony serial killer like Richard Ramirez, are actually practicing in America today?

Nope, could well have been pro-lifers looking for an ugly tool for a protest or two. I mean, come on, these are people who advocate the murder of adult human beings over the abortion of half-formed fetuses.

Qualification: just after I posted I realized that was somewhat unfair. Not all pro-lifers advocate the murder of abortion doctors. But I ask again: where are the moderates to denounce such activities? Absent from the conversation, it seems.

Well, I’m sure if someone took out Ann Coulter you wouldn’t be complaining, even though you don’t advocate that sort of thing. It’s sort of like the E.L.F. and the A.L.F. thing with the leaders of those organizations advocating the killing of researchers who use animals, we act outraged, but to people that think they see institutionalized murder (even if they are wrong) it is perfectly rational, and would be rational to us to if we agreed with them on abortion. If we thought the government or any other institution was legally (I say legally because if illegally most of us would go to the police or any branch of the government not in cahoots with the offending party) executing innocent people, we would probably advocate the same thing with the moderates sitting next to us, silent but in agreement. To be fair though, I have known a few pro-lifers denouncing the act of killing doctors.

I understand the emotions behind pro-life arguments. I just happen to think adult, fully-formed human beings should trump life forms that aren’t any more self-aware than lab mice. Reproductive rights are essential in a sane world. Women’s bodies self-abort unhealthy fetuses all the time. If a woman has come to the conclusion that the fetus she is carrying will have an unhealthy life because she is in no condition to raise it properly, I don’t see it as much different. What upsets me are the pro-lifers who have no problem with war or the death penalty, yet can get rabidly, viciously worked up about this issue. To me, that’s a skewed moral compass. Yes, not all pro-lifers are like that, but the majority come from the Christian Right, and I can’t remember the last time I saw those people organize a peace march.
On that note, one of my favorite bumper stickers.

I live in the Bible belt and see these people on a regular basis… they have rallys where they hold up signs with pictures of aborted fetuses. They will come up behind you while you wait for the light and scream about their garbage. All I can think of everytime I see them is that Howard Stern was taken off the local stations here directly due to these people… so Howard was bad but showing people aborted fetuses is good? I can’t help myslef so I let them have it …when they hold out a flyer for me I grab the stack in their other hand and say “yea, I’ll take ‘em all” and I throw the stack in the nearest garbage and tell them “this is where it belongs… if your god is so great he’ll get them out for you asshole!” I hate those fuckers!
