The “liberal war on Christmas” bullshit starts again

25 October 2005 by Ron

Santa gives you the fingerThe usually good Media Matters for America has a nice piece pointing out that Fux News is starting to ramp up its “Stop the War on Christmas” campaign again this year: Fox renews war to save Christmas from the “loony left” and ACLU. A couple of excerpts:

On the October 20 edition of The O’Reilly Factor, Fox News re-launched its campaign to end what several of its hosts have referred to as liberals’ “war” on Christmas…. O’Reilly discussed the “war” with John Gibson, a fellow Fox News host and author of The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought…. “It’s the loony left, the Kool-Aid secular progressive ACLU America-haters. That’s who’s doing this.”… Before Christmas last year, Fox News devoted extensive coverage to a number of small incidents involving public holiday displays that didn’t specifically reference Christmas. O’Reilly and fellow Fox News host Sean Hannity led the campaign, which included a recurring segment on The O’Reilly Factor called “Christmas Under Siege.”

Which just reminds me of a “favorite” quote from Ann “Nazi Barbie” Coulter, on being in New York for December: “Oh, it was so much fun this year, because saying ‘Merry Christmas’ is like saying ‘Fuck you!’ I’ve said it to everyone. You know, cab drivers, passing people on the street, whatever.” Hey, she’s a horrible lying Nazi bitch, but give her points for saying outright what the assholes at Fux News really mean.

(If you care, I commented a bit on all this last year, in Merry fucking Xmas, part I, Merry fucking Xmas, part II, and Merry fucking Xmas, part III.)

    Nice graphic, haha!

My own little liberal plot is to celebrate Krismis, a secular holiday based around family, friends, food, drink, music, and gift-giving, on December 25–thereby undermining the sacred holiday of Christmas, which used to be celebrated on that day.

    Muhuhahaha!

As a parent, my personal favorite is Part II, i.e., the “looking forward to all those presents? oh, what’s that, you don’t get those? you poor deprived child!” bullshit is going to become annoying. (Not to mention all the Fux News crap.)

Does it not occur to us to see the similarities between this theistic God image and Santa Claus? We are told that Santa Claus has an all-seeing capacity. “He’s making a list and checking it twice. Going to find our whose naughty or nice.” Does that not sound like the all-seeing record keeping theistic deity? This Santa figure also comes out of the infinite skies, accompanied not by heavenly host but by magical reindeer. He brings presents to the good children as their reward and ashes and switches to the bad children as their punishment. Santa is but one more icon of the theistic deity who as the personal judge gives the ultimate reward of heavenly bliss through all eternity to the deserving or the fiery punishment of hell through all eternity. Such a deity would inspire exactly the kind of worship we have offered. It is worship filled with praise and breast-beating, confession of our unworthiness, accompanied by pleas for mercy.

I can’t help it - the constant whining and persecution complex of these people is fucking hilarious. The more they do it, the bigger asses they make out of themselves.

Anyone watch ‘Closer to Home’ last night? A perfect example.

  5. Alan:

Oh, those poor persecuted Christians. How long until no one even remembers a holiday named Christmas? How absurd.

Tony D- nice point… it’s as if Santa is the perfect setup for xian brainwashing. The little xian youngsters believe in Santa and are wary… fear guides the early xians in hope of gifts and not embarassment. When the little xians come of age they’re told that although Santa’s fake, gawd is real …really real …and the presents are happiness and the coal is hell!!!

How unfortunate for the little xians to stop getting presents from Santa and never getting a fucking thing from their grown-up gawd.

Check out the shirt at the Landover Baptist Church store. For anyone who might be interested.

“Check out the shirt at the Landover Baptist Church store. For anyone who might be interested.”

    The back should say:

“…except nobody fills in for his lazy ass!”

I really liked your piece last year about your son and his response to the harassment. Where can we send him gifts, the poor little Tiny Tim? :-)

Christmas has been a secular holiday for me for so long that I didn’t even note the excessive Xianity until recently. Well, about the time I began to note the excessive Xianity everywhere? Thanks for keeping us informed.

you all need to check your facts before you go linking santa with christmas. As someone who was raised by fundies, I can inform you that if you mix up the letters in santa, it spells satan. santa is a plot of the devil to draw the attention away from jesus. kids who believe in santa are deceived by the devil and going to hell.

The more moderate fundies who understand the etymology of santa will tell you that Saint Nicholas is a catholic saint associated with a catholic holiday on december 6. catholics are going to hell because they aren’t real christians because they worship saints instead of god. That’s idolitry. So you see, if you believe in santa, you’re still going to hell, but for a slightly more complicated reason.

Those are the party lines… at least they were last time I checked… I suspect that santa is part of the perceived war against christmas… any time you see santa instead of a nativity scene, it’s part of what fox news is complaining about.
