Baby-Killing Mom Pleads Not Guilty
(AP) A woman accused of killing her 10-month-old daughter by cutting off the baby’s arms with a kitchen knife went on trial Monday after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Police found Dena Schlosser, 37, covered in blood in her kitchen, still holding a knife and listening to a church hymn.
Isn’t it so nice that God makes us nuts? What a loving being…
UPDATE:
Hang on, folks; things get better:
They have also faulted Schlosser’s husband, John Schlosser, and the family’s devotion to an unconventional church for exacerbating her illness and discouraging medical treatment.“I do not believe that any mental illness exists other than demons, and no medication can straighten it out, other than the power of God,” Doyle Davidson, their church’s 73-year-old pastor testified Wednesday. The Schlosser family attended the Water of Life Church several times a week.

The prosecutor is obviously right. Come on, look at her. She seems perfectly sane, doesn’t she? I mean, doesn’t everybody smile for their mugshot after cutting their baby’s arms off?

As long as I’m feeling sick, let’s make everyone miserable
Just a suggestion: don’t browse weblogs when you’re trying to perk yourself up with a little cheery good news. The woman who chopped off her baby’s arms in the name of her god is pleading not guilty by reason…

It is possible to be mentally ill, delusional, what have you, and still understand something you’re doing is wrong.

Of course, it’s possible, Tim. No one ever said it was impossible. Your claim, if it’s going to make any sense here, has to be that all cases of delusional-mentally-ill-what-have-you stuff have this “understanding” quality. Good luck with that.

Bit of useless speculation/flamebait here:
Part of psychiatry’s function is to evaluate legal competence. Almost nobody, however strongly they feel about religion, wants to see it used to determine anybody’s status before the law. So I wonder: why do we take it for granted that those who believe in a personal god are saner than those who believe the CIA bugs their microwave? Is it because they _are_ saner, or because a need for consistency in their field keeps psychiatrists from seeking out a form of delusion in the clinic that they dread having to acknowledge in the courts?
I also wonder how soon this Christbot’s children might’ve been given a real home if society dared to ask itself such questions. That she’s a drooling lunatic is now beyond doubt, but come on, there had to have been warning signs a bit more subtle than attempted baby sacrifice. It sickens me to think that any maniac can write off his violent hallucinations as respectable opinion simply by uttering the G word–Jesus himself couldn’t pull off a slicker transformation than that.

All those people should be incarcerated for the remainder of their lives. For stupidity if nothing else. It is a rarity that the news reports such news.I would never have imagined any human could do such a thing to their own child. I hope the woman gets the death pjenalty for this. If anyone deserves death it is her.
I wonder why the psychic church prophets didn’t warn anyone about her.
I read this a few days ago and could not believe it. I hope those of you who are church goers are ready to get your shit together and stop this kind of nonsense. And never critisize any of us again. And to the god who created this woman FUCK YOU.

“I do not believe that any mental illness exists other than demons, and no medication can straighten it out, other than the power of God,” Doyle Davidson, their church’s 73-year-old pastor testified Wednesday.
Ha. Her family may be too stupid to know that they shouldn’t thank him for such testimony. He’s basically saying she isn’t insane (which, of course, she is), and that is really her only hope at this point.
I think she should be institutionalized for the rest of her life. She was taking ant-psychotic meds that she had gone off of due to insurance problems. Plus she had this lunatic preacher babbling at her twice a week. I mean, fuck. She’s nuts. Put her away forever, but not necessarily in prison. A nuthouse would do fine. Kind of like John Hinckley.
Unfortunately, this is not really an option. As things work now, there are only two choices: guilty (prison), or not guilty by reason of insanity (hospital, until some quack says she is better). John Hinckley will never go free, but that’s because he shot a president. He was actually allowed to visit his parents recently, I seem to remember, but under a tight rein.
She’s either going to jail, or, disturbingly, will be free, perhaps without proper care for her her serious mental illness, in maybe just a year or so.

The prosecution is not seeking the death penalty.
I fail to see how killing her would benefit society. But this is probably not the forum for such a debate.

The best part is that if she goes free, her nutty pastor can tell her that God will forgive her and cure her, so she’ll be fine and may even be able to live with herself despite what she did.

Demons ?!? Well in that case wouldn’t Buffy the Vampire Slayer be the best solution ??
Seriously what this woman did is absolutely chilling and she should be locked up in a cold dark place and left there to rot. As for this kook pastor, he clearly needs some meds and should be thrown in the loony bin to get some and then in jail for his role in helping push a mentally unstable woman *way* over the edge.

Ah, so it’s a Dune thing…

Hey, the incident is really sickening! But don’t blame God of this woman’s insane, daibolic deed. God did not instigate her to do it. She is responsible of her action, if not in this “crooked justice” of the earth, she could not escape from the judgment of God.

GOD ONLY CREATED THIS WOMAN AND THEN SAT IDLY BY AND WATCHED HER CUT HER BABY’S ARMS OFF. HOWEVER, I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN HE HELPED ME WIN $100 PLAYING LOTTO LAST WEEK. God did not instigate her to do it. I USE BIG WORDS LIKE “INSTIGATE”, AND I USE THEM AWKWARDLY IN BADLY CONSTRUCTED SENTENCES. She is responsible of her action, if not in this “crooked justice” of the earth, she could not escape from the judgment of God. I AM A SCREAMING FROOT LOOP WHO MAKES ABOUT AS MUCH SENSE AS A PAPER DILDO.
