Xianity is a contradiction to our moral codes

morality like artRaen posted this comment here: “So, how does one define “good” and “bad” if all of her beliefs come from empirical data? It seems to me that everyone thinks that her own desires / wishes are good. I’m sure that Hitler thought that ordering the deaths of 6 million Jews was a good thing to do. On what basis can you say that is wrong?”

In the absence of religion, society would still need some set of guidelines for us all to co-exist peacefully. Governments and the people of a society construct laws using COMMON SENSE and take into consideration what will be best for the peaceful function of that particular society which will ensure the health, happiness and liberty overall for each individual as well as the society as a whole.

Most religions are a contradiction to our society’s moral codes. Xianity, in particular, is founded on violence (argument between god and satan, god throws him into a pit and then lets him out to wreak havoc, god wreaks havoc and kills (he especially likes to kill firstborn babies instead of going after who he really has a beef with — like Pharoahs), Jesus comes and preaches that he didn’t come to bring peace, but war (Matthew 5:17 for those who want sources), this god creates himself a son and allows his “son” to be mutilated and ultimately put to death in a most violent way, and in the end, as written in the book of Revelation, there will be a great war between heaven and earth…I could provide many more violent examples but it’s all in the Bible, (but most xians skirt around the bad stuff, and take the good stuff. They only want to believe the stuff that suits themselves and what will benefit them…mostly ETERNAL LIFE because they are afraid to die.)

Xianity is a religion based on violence and often used to justify violence. This god was violent BEFORE humans were supposedly created. This god of Xian mythology kills, mutilates, destroys, tortures, teases, tests, wants animal sacrifices, wants people to sacrifice their children, wants people to disown their families for him. Every moral code we hold dear in our society is violated by this god.

Stardust, nicely put. I can’t wait to see how the xian lurkers plaguing us lately will squirm out of your arguments. I’m sure they’ll just tell you that it’s a combo of free will and original sin which forces gawd to be so violent. It’s our fault he had to nail his kid to some boards.

I wonder if anyone here would appreciate watching this Fox “News” guy blow a gasket over the gospel of Judas? ;) from onegoodmove

KR – And my argument for that is that this god was violent BEFORE he supposedly made the earth and humans. Therefore, if this god made us in his image, he made us to be just like him. Then we had to make up morals to counter his evilness.

I agree with you though that xians will not permit themselves to think outside the box. If they answer at all they most certainly will make things up again to justify their beliefs.

None have yet commented on why they are so sad when their believer friends and family die and how they will bawl like babies if they found out they had a terminal illness instead of being excited and happy to be going to live with the sky daddy.

    Manxome,

That was a great video; John Kasich is a fricken idiot. No wonder the people where I live are so dumb- they watch this kind of trash.

  5. Sean:

I love how the preacher on the right in the John Kasich video just sits there. This reminds of when Bill O’Reilly has people on. He just yells at the liberal and the conservative sock puppet stays silent. These shows aren’t even about liberals debating conservatives, they are about Fox “News” anchors getting on people they personally want to scream at.

You can see the exact same behavior here when the leader of the counter protest against Battle Cry for a Generation (which happened on the steps of SF City Hall) was invited on the O’Reilly Factor. She’s quite good, actually. I will be linking to this later if/when I write about Battlecry.com.

    Nice post, Stardust.

And if any of you want more, hey, there’s a couple-thousand-year-old part of western philosophy called “Ethical Theory” that’s mostly about finding ethical truth which isn’t simply handed down from invisible daddy. When you ask “what else but God?”, it seems you might try looking at, you know, the long intellectual tradition that tries to answer that. If I say “well, I’m vaguely Rawlsian with both pluralistic and Kantian overtones” and that sounds like I’m speaking Martian, then maybe your inability to see “what else” is just the purest sort of ignorance. Try reading what the great thinkers said in answer to that question.

  7. Bob:

Nice one, Ron. I’ve been trying to say the same thing.

  8. Sean:

By the way, Star… Great post. Sorry I didn’t mention that. I plan on reading it a few more times!

  9. Stardust1954:

Thanks Sean. I am going to try to work it into a large article for the Chicago Tribune editorial page, minus Raen, of course.

  10. Eve:

You go, star; let us know about the editorial, OK?

I love how the faux newscaster keeps interrupting when the guy from the NGS brings up the fact that the NT isn’t a first hand account, and that there were over thirty gospels written in the first two centuries AD. Newsbastard didn’t want to hear anything that challenged his worldview, did he? Kinda the microcosm of the wingnuts right there.
