Ron, many thanks again for the site.

All you commenters on this thread, thanks for weighing in! We love hearing from you.

As for rolie acot, in the spirit of humanism and empathy, here's hoping you finally get the therapy, medication, and reality-based support system you need to get and stay well.

I would like to thank all who came on this thread and told their stories. This was a very rewarding experience.

Thank you especially to the LGBT atheists who opted to tell us even more about themselves than simply their views on religion.

I think you are all brave people for daring to be true to your intellects and your hearts in the face of such overwhelming odds against free thought.

And to Rolie Acot: you suck orangutan ass and will never be one tenth the human being these wonderful individuals are.

Thought I'd add to the growing list here. I'm completely out as an atheist... and rather vocal about it, I might add. As I live in NYC, and have worked in the Arts for the last 10 years or so, I've never encountered much outright intolerance about it from my neighbors or coworkers. In fact, my "Impeach God" bumper sticker (home-made) has attracted quite a few encouraging comments on the roadways (several shouts of "Right On!" etc., including an unlikely one from a team of New Jersey construction workers!). My immediate family are almost all secular (or Buddhist), and have been mostly encouraging.

As far Outtolunch's problems, I can certainly commiserate. The single most inconvenient aspect of my staunch atheism has been in my dating life.... The only time I've been dumped by a girlfriend has been over my lack of belief in her "spirituality" (which had been getting on my nerves, to be perfectly honest), and sometimes even the most liberal intellectual wishy-washy agnostic quasi-spiritual people have been surprisingly hesitant to really discuss religion with me. I can't even imagine the tense situation of seriously dating someone who has a professed religion (not that I'd be interested in them: I don't like taking sexual advantage of the mentally handicapped [joking, mostly]).

By the way, Outtolunch, I can't recommend moving to New York City if cost of living is a major concern (not to mention parking!)... but you had better get out of Kansas quick! Maybe you could try another Eastern Seaboard city: Baltimore, perhaps, or Philly. Or any major metropolitan area, I suppose. Anywhere but Kansas!

As far as LGBT atheists, I am friends with quite a few (including a trans in Arizona, of all places!), and I'll try to convince them to post. Actually, the only Christian I'm friends with is also one of the most vigorously out gay man I know. Cognitive dissonance, indeed.

Well, Outtolunch... I was gonna say come to the SF Bay Area before you said the thing about the cost of living. Doh.

Silicon Valley is exploding again and there is tons of work down in the San Jose area (I say "down", because I am in SF).

Not many people here would refuse to date you just because you are an atheist.
