Indonesians plead for aid; toll over 4,300
BANTUL, Indonesia - Tens of thousands camped out for a second night Sunday in streets, cassava fields and the paths between rice paddies as the death toll from Indonesia’s earthquake topped 4,300. [...] Torrential rain late Sunday added to the misery of some 200,000 people left homeless by Saturday’s 6.3-magnitude quake, most of them living in makeshift shelters of plastic, canvas or cardboard. Thousands of wounded awaited treatment in hospitals overflowing with bloodied patients. [...] The worst devastation was in the Bantul district, which accounted for three-quarters of the deaths. One man dug his 5-year-old daughter out of the rubble of her bedroom only to have her die in a hospital awaiting treatment with hundreds of others. “Her last words were ‘Daddy, Daddy,’” said Poniran, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. “I have to start my life from zero again.”
Hey, Augustine claimed that God corrects and tests the faith of parents through the suffering and death of their children. So, like, what’s the big deal?

What part of God’s “plan” is this, exactly?

Any trolls out there listening? Yeah you out there who say that *God is all powerful, all loving, all merciful, and all knowing!* Yeah, you out there that keep telling us to *have faith in His wondrous loving care and saving grace.* Let us do some role playing.
Suppose GOD ASKED YOU to HONESTLY, OBJECTIVELY, FAIRLY, THOUGHTFULLY, and RATIONALLY rate him/her against a standard set of human criteria. You know the criteria against which we can and do fairly judge humans daily. You know the rational criteria we use when we judge our use of power, our TRUE morality, our compassion, our value as a friend, a parent, a boss, etc.
Yup, he/she wants you to rate him/her like any of us get rated and judged. Well! What ratings and comments would you give him/her?
Hey hey — stifle the babble about not judging god. Remember it is he/she who is asking you to rate him/her. Just be straightforward. God is NOT looking for mystical babble about devils and demons; do not answer it with any supernatural claim about mysterious plans and future rewards — he/she would not have asked you to do this if it boiled down to that shit. Just fucking be HONEST and give an HONEST RATIONAL answer to his/her question. Hey it is being done for god and for YOURSELVES, not for us heathens; no, most of us on this site well know the answer already.
Do it! Just do it! Rate god as he/she just asked you to do!
What?!? You cannot?!? Why you poor dear you are sweating. You are shaking, my you are scared!! Woops - you are babbling again — making excuses and NOT critically and clinically rating as asked. No no — not the assignment!
Why cannot you do it even when god asks you to do it?? Why??????? The truth will set you free – JUST DO IT!

Ha. ConcernedJoe: These are the moments when the theists go quiet on this side of the fence. You won’t likely hear from them. They are too busy on the other side praising the lord for the handful of survivors.
Meanwhile, I wonder how many have wasted their time with useless prayers, rather than go online and do dilligent research for places to give to charity.
As much as I heard about the SNAFUs of the Red Cross during Katrina, they still seem the first, best way to get money to Indonesian quake victicms:

If anyone has better suggestions, please post them.

Sean - thank you for drawing our attention to REAL things we should be considering and doing if we can, as *moral* people — be we theist, deist, or atheist.
Oh, and thanks for a pretty darn good blog.

Thank you, CJ.

I’m just waiting for some militant Muslim assholes in Indonesia to claim that the earthquake and the volcano is Allah’s anger because of Playboy magazine or something stupid like that.
Other charities to consider are OxFam and Doctors Without Borders.

…and how much MORE ‘Sadism’ is waiting in the wings, considering the upcoming Hurricane season? [Yikes,...only days away!]
Thanks for that ‘mahvelous’ Rant, ConcernedJoe! It almost seems, to me, like you’ve been reading our ‘clubhouse’ members’ minds or something, with your wonderful ‘outburst’;…I certainly wouldn’t want to really even TRY too much to imagine what bullshit thoughts might be swirling in all those Fundie asshat brains, with this tragic story.
Hmmm…[however],…what insanity will Falwell & Robertson dole out to the media about THIS news?
Let’s see,…The Supreme Sadist is [as is his 'wont'] punishing the world for…ummm…something to do with us atheists…and, of course…without question, the gays [Sodom & Gomorra again!]…the ‘Marriage issue’…and…errr…
“Nobody suspects the Spanish Inquisiton”?…wait a MINUTE!…I know!… it’s…
SEAN!…it’s all your fault, Sean!…of course!…
This Blog is the reason! Should we immediately board up,…barricade,…and hide under the stairs?
[Oh,...there ARE no stairs?]
Did I just hear some muttering in the ‘clubhouse’, regarding my last comment? Something like:
“NOBODY CAST A STONE, UNTIL I BLOW THIS WHISTLE!” [John Cleese/'Life of Brian']
OK…yeah…sorry…more of the Python references!…
In actuality, sometimes I feel like totally shutting down on watching the media; considering all the tragic stories involving natural disasters, Afghanistan, the Iraq War, etc.
We have, at this point, absolutely, no REAL control over the ‘Forces of Nature’, but regarding our human input into the ‘equation’:
“Can’t we all, just,…get along?” [Jack Nicholson in "Mars Attacks"]
“ACK, ACK!!” [What's that!...Trolls at the gates?]

Does Augustine say anything about the reverse situation? As in, what God is up to when he kills the parents of little children who have yet to even develop a concept of faith — you know, other than a childlike belief that mommy and daddy will always be here?
Religion is a sickness.

ChuckA: I am flattered that you think I am responsible for this heathen haven on the Net, but all credit goes to Ron, who can argue with a theist in his sleep much better than I could on crystal meth. He’s got degrees and shit.
And no one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle! Do you understand?! Even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say “Jehovah.”

Re God’s “plan,” does anyone remember hearing in your early religious days, that God never lays a heavier burden on someone than he or she can bear? So, that would mean, um, whoever commits suicide, goes crazy, becomes a refugee, dies in a natural disaster, etc., is just, like, bearing his/her burden in a really creative way? So that’s okay then. I used to believe this - also that I was going to hell, but was never sure exactly what for.
Ain’t it a kick?

Also (sorry to clog up comments), this suggests that the plan God has for each of us often expresses itself throughout large groups. I.E. all the refugees from the Sudan are part of the same plan, all the dead Iraqi children are taken care of by the sanctions plan, all the uninsured children in the U.S. are part of the same plan and live in similar areas - Appalachia, inner cities, rural farms which have been foreclosed, etc. Isn’t it neat how that works out?

And never mess with him when he’s drunk. I’ve seen this fucker shred the best of them and make them cry like babies.
I mean, besides me…

Clearly this is the ‘Grind ‘em down until they will accept any claim or hope offered by the missionaries and clutch at it as if their life depended upon it’ phase. Unless it’s the ‘Object lesson about the evils of whatever Believer X happens to dislike so they can rally popular and political support’ phase. Who knows? Mysterious ways and all that.

(Ed: Comment policy violation, but funny enought to put through anyway. I didn\’t edit it; that would have been gilding the lily.)
heyy howdy non believers!
Anywho….You guysare funny talking about stuff you dont know.
READ The KJV bible.God is not loving and kind.Thats YOUR misconception.Thru the pages of the bible God hates sin,and judges it harshly,if you have a notion of a touchy feely God get over it.God is HOLY.You need to find out what that means. He wont let any beings get by with SIN,man or angel.(yes im talking about unbelievers Father the devil)Judgements coming so you freaks are getting uptight.Jesus said ya would so we expect it.You keep putting human meaning to Gods efforts to get ya to repent, like global warming but in Revelation 16:8-9 it says; 8)The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. 9)They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.All these thing were written so idiots like you and me could know God and fear Him.Then Love Him for what He did thru Jesus and the Cross. You all know what that. And because you know You will not be found guiltless.Hey I doubt this gets on the page but who knows.
