Carl Sagan’s MySpace Page
30 June 2006 by Sean
Okay. My last post about Carl Sagan tonight, I promise.
Did you know he has a MySpace page?

Okay, it’s not really him, of course, but what a fun way to remember him.
Carl Sagan’s Blurbs
About me:
Hi, there. I’m Carl Edward Sagan, an American astronomer. Some have claimed that I have pioneered exobiology (an interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology, which considers the origin of life on Earth and elsewhere) and promoted the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence, but really, I’m just a normal guy who likes stargazing.
Who I’d like to meet:
Those who are involved with the fight against myelodysplasia, which is the illness that I succumbed to on December 20, 1996 at the young age of 62.
And how cool is this?
Carl Sagan has 409 friends.
And I love the fact that they give his age as it would be now:
Male
71 years old
Seattle, Washington
United States
Check out all the comments from Carl’s friends. Kinda chokes ya up a bit.
I think I’ll grab my copy of Broca’s Brain and head to bed.

That is VERY cool…going to check it out now.

Did you notice the “Zodiac sign” listing in the sidebar? Here’s Carl’s horoscope reading:
“You have been stressed by the push-pull of responsibility these past weeks and you might be tired of feeling stuck….”
Yes, I imagine there’s no place more “stuck” than being dead.
Carl Sagan was so NOT into astrology. Killed the suspension of disbelief for me pronto. And I suspect he would have been quite annoyed that MYSPACE contained this mumbo-jumbo delusion. As he said, “It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.”

That’s it, Skribb. Look on the bright side of things.

It might be worth noting that the first friend on the front page is his son. I wonder if Nick Sagan created this page?

Sean: I do, I do.

You’re right, Lynda. Someone should post a comment telling them to remove the Zodiac crap.

Footnote: I just tried joining MySpace and there is no obvious way to make it stop displaying that rubbish.

I suspected as much, Aesmael.
