Ethiopian floods feared to have killed 870
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia appealed for international help on Wednesday after the death toll from a devastating series of floods this month rose to some 870. [...] Rescuers discovered 170 more bodies on Wednesday three days after the Omo River burst its banks. “Rescuers using motorboats and helicopters picked 170 more bodies out of the swollen Omo river which broke its banks and submerged surrounding villages, bringing the death toll there to 364,” Inspector Daniel Gezahenge told Reuters. [...] “There is no access to the area. The roads are not passable, and because of heavy clouds even helicopters cannot move,” Vincent Lelei, deputy head of mission for the U.N. office for humanitarian affairs (OCHA) in Ethiopia, told Reuters. “The visibility is very poor,” he added. State television said two army helicopters and 14 motorboats had been deployed to evacuate up to 6,000 people marooned by the floods, but bad weather has been hampering rescue efforts. [...] Officials and aid workers say the numbers of dead and homeless could turn out to be much higher due to the inaccessibility of the regions worst affected. The local populations are mainly nomadic herders.
And we all know what kind of evil people nomadic herders can be…

I guess they weren’t Christian enough. Kind of like when god destroyed the Mississippi Gulf Coast - one of the most bible-thumpin’ places in America and it still wasn’t Christian enough. It has to make you wonder how anyone can view the Christian god as anything other than a source of cruelty, pain, and suffering.

OT. You guys have been called out. Amanda, who posts regularly at my blog, has written a piece taking talking points from Dr. Hovind. The entry is so full of errors I don’t even know where to start…
Check it out here.
Maybe it shouldn’t, but it really makes me angry when people call evolution a religion. They just can’t get it through their heads that science is based on evidence.

It’s kind of like Cain and Abel all over again, if you look at that story as sort of an analogy for the irradication of early nomadic humans by early agricultural humans. I’m not sure if the flooding could be attributed to the destruction of indigenous plants that inhibit runoff for agricultural purposes, but I wouldn’t doubt it.
Then again, it could have been some big, invisible Nazi in the sky. Yeah, Africa gets the shaft at every turn.

Bob. I guess you don’t love me anymore. Or gawd doesn’t. Or both.

Nah, keep ‘em coming Bob.

Thanks. As you said, they play fast and loose with the facts. My favorite quote:
Dr. Hovind believes things are spinning backwards because God created everything and He did it on purpose to make the big bang theory look stupid. Also, if the big bang theory were true, the matter would be evenly distributed. Instead, it is “lumpy.” There are clusters of stars then great voids.
God apparently was so worried about us atheists, and scientists, that before the beginning of the universe, he created things a certain way so as to discredit us. Boy, do I feel important.

Bob. I guess you don’t love me anymore.
Hey, don’t say that. You know I love you. I mean, I gave you this, didn’t I?
I’M YOUR KOJAK, BABY…

Them Ethiopian fellers got it too good. They needed to be dropped down a peg. We all know Gawd don’t give a shit for no brown folks- ain’t ya never heard of the third world. First World is White Men, Second World is, grudgingly, White Women, and the Third World is everbody else. Sheeeit, Gawd cares more for each “sparrow fallen out of the sky” than he does a brown person. Haven’t you read your Repiglickin talking points?

“Dr. Hovind believes things are spinning backwards because God created everything and He did it on purpose to make the big bang theory look stupid.”
Or the big bang theory makes Hovind look stupid. You don’t think scientists would formulate such a theory without taking these things into account do you?
If God wanted everyone to believe in him there are far more appreciable ways he could have done it: he could have included a page or two in the bible on how to manufacture medicine to treat leprosy rather than just lettin’ his begotten boy do it, he could have included the technical diagrams and specifications of an aircraft, even a simple one, he could have included a definitive prophecy rather than a bunch of vague horoscope-esque nonsense, et cetera… The only explanation for these omissions is that he’s lax on that whole we-need-proof thing or the bible’s authors weren’t divinely inspired.

OK, Bob. I gotta admit the Tom Jones Church post was delightful. Thank you for saving me from more of the world’s misery.
(Psst: Sometimes I think Bob actually believes in God, but just hates his ass for being such a fucker.)

PS: The thing is, Dr. Bob’s specialty is the problem of evil. Problem is, he’s too good at it.

Martian.. I just checked out that link. That chick is crazy stupid. Why should we even respond to her?

Remember when I said I loved you?…
Oh, fuck it…okay, I still do…
But you watch that irish mouth…

How can anyone believe in a religion where the “word of God” was written before there was any written language. Have you ever played Chinese whispers?
