The Atheist, P-Funk, is Accosted by Christian Evangelists

This video footage shows exactly what atheists and others have to put up with nearly every time we want to take a walk downtown, especially in the southern states. I am amazed that this guy remained so civil through this onslaught of badgering and idiotic questioning. I would have told them to get the fuck away from me after the first few seconds.

    Yikes!
Paraphrasing one of the last idiot’s question to the ‘victim’:
“In this particular Universe [Science] said there were nine planets…is that right?”
This relates to something I think I commented on at GifS, not too long ago.
Scientifically ignorant people [fundies, in particular], STILL…practically speaking…really think of this planet, or in this case, the local solar system, as being akin to what they refer to as the Universe.
It’s amazing how bad the education system is in regards to Science. This is 2007?

Yeah, Stardust; after an initial ‘civil’ attempt [MAYBE!]…I would have shortly thereafter told them to “Bugger off!”…well…OK…more like:
“Fuck off, you ignorant, brainwashed imbeciles; try learning how to think; you know…using rational thought? But, for the moment…take that bible you’re carrying, and shove it WAAAAY up; where the sun never shines!
What’s that?…you sun yourself while lying on your stomach?…erm…
No matter!…at least you definitely know the intended target area!”

Yeah…I know, Star…that’s spending way too much time and energy!

    How ’bout…Giving them the ‘bird’…and then…
maybe…grabbing their camcorder; and running away…as fast as possible?
    NO?
My other ‘ones’ might be more in the…
“Whilst drooling and slurping…with a distorted, fiendish facial expression…Make comments like…
“I’m a REAL ‘Hannibal Lecter’ or ‘Jeffry Dahlmer’ devotee…’?
Perhaps, cackling: “I SNACK on fuckhead idiots like you!…Harrr!”
“I’ll bet you two nice, plump, Xtian boys…taste…
JUST like chicken!…Mmmm! (more drooling, slurping & intense wriggling of tongue)…
    [finally adding a Werewolf-like howl?]”
    Then again…
    Maybe not! ;)

  2. ChuckA:

Speaking of Xtian Snacks! Maybe, this line?:

  3. Vinnie:

Man! the guy is amzing! How did he keep so cool and rational? Hats off! I wish I was that patient coz i think fundies just try to worn us down most of the times, we just give up because of exaustion.

  4. beepbeepitsme:

That man deserves a medal for not telling them to fook off. I deserve a medal for watching the whole video of such annoying twats.

  5. Brock:

beepbeepitsme: “I deserve a medal for watching the whole video of such annoying twats.”

Yes, you do. I couldn’t finish watching it. In fact, I stopped after about 30 seconds.

  6. Phronk:

I admire this man not only for his rationality and patience, but for his amazing ability to carry on a conversation while walking backwards.

  7. stardust:

If they were filming this little activity to show how bad blasphemous atheists are, they only proved to the world how STUPID AND OBNOXIOUS xians are! These people are sprinkled on the streets around Chicago in the downtown area and people ignore them and keep walking, or do indeed tell them to get lost. Chicagoans on their way to work or to the trains are really good at making these people “invisible”.

take that bible you’re carrying, and shove it WAAAAY up; where the sun never shines!

LOL! ChuckA, I am sure that has been told to them many times, but they will only shove the babble up their rear ends if their Pastors tell them to do it. (Or if they hear their imaginary friend tell them to.)

  8. coz:

That guy is great. Much cooler than I would have reacted with those guys swarming about.

  9. The Rev. Jenner J. Hull:

    “Make my funk the P-Funk!”

Dude handled himself perfectly. They should’ve had him on Paula Zahn’s debacle…

  10. Weasel:

I had 3:27 left to go on that vid. I had to stop. Man, talk about annoying!

P-Funk, you rock. I would have flipped out within 5 seconds of that bs. You are the man.

  11. Old Viking:

What a display of civility on P-Funk’s part. Given the opportunity, the fundies would harrass and assault everyone who disagrees with them.

  12. Crudely Wrott:

    Heh heh. Good form.

My Dad used to say: “Be wise, kind, and a little bit blind.”

Timothy admonishes in the NT to be “as cunning as serpents and as harmless as a dove”.

Observation and experience indicates that the best results can often be obtained by judicious use of these principles coupled with a willingness to meet silliness head on. Pow!

In all things there is a balance. The hard part is being both lever and fulcrum when confronting uncritical acceptance of woo.

May we all become adept artists of equilibrium.

  13. Eve:

    P-Funk definitely rocks!

  14. Stardust:

I just showed my husband this video and when it got to the part where the one dude asks P-Funk “what miracle would it take to make you believe?” my hubby said “for you to disappear, right now before my eyes.”

(another one he said would be a good response, “how about I turn around and rip your fucking head off and see if you keep talking to me.”)

That’s not the fault of the educational system, Chucky baby, that there is willful ignorance, brought to you by the LAWD-DA JEEBUS KEERIST!

Good job man. Your site hits home. Anyone who wants to put a smile on their face, please feel free to pay the Rev. a visit. click on his name in #9 above.

    WHERE ARE THEY GOING?

  18. Stardust:

    WHERE ARE THEY GOING?

Ben, if you watch all the way to the end, you can see they followed P-Funk all the way to an Enterprise car rental place.

    Got ya, Reverend, baby…er…
    I mean…Revenant…
    baby?

I was skipping the fact that lots of these religious boneheads often never even finish high school; and even if they did take, even one, science course in school, not much is generally covered, in those courses, regarding any existence beyond the solar system, let alone the known facts about our ‘Milky Way Galaxy’ and the mind-boggling greater Universe. After all, even NASA, to the public, is still pretty much focused on the ‘Colloquial’ terrain.
Yeah, religion…again…for most people, trumps REAL knowledge in any “Carl Sagan” mode.
When brainwashed people…and that covers the majority of society…regularly take their dogma reaffirming daily or weekly drug ‘tokes’ [you know: bowing, praying and church/temple/mosque attending]…larger notions of the universe get totally pushed out of their little selfish reality picture!
I don’t think we’re really seriously at odds on this, Revenant. [And, So What if we are? ;) ]
The fault, I think, lies in MANY levels of our everyday culture. It’s not hard to ’see’ it, once one steps away, if only mentally, from the greater ‘Herd”. [I've always felt like an outcast, anyway.]
    So…
    “YAYESS…THANK YOU-A …LAWD-DA…JEEBUS-A
    HALLOWEEJA!
    [Whispering to self:
    "Now-a, let me count-a the Offerings-a!"]
    ;) -a

Even more impressive to me than P-Funk’s composure was his inviting, patient attitude. When I’m dealing with Christians attempting to force their ideology on me, I get on the defensive right away. Even if I’m not being RUDE, I’m shut off, trying to get these people to just leave me alone.

But this guy genuinely seems interested in educating his irritants, of helping them to see that they are helping to propogate a fraud. Even if it never works, I respect him for trying.

  21. jimmer:

    I thought P-funk was Parliment Funkadelic? Ala George Clinton, Bootsie Collins et al. Like this;

Nah, we’re not at odds. My statement was more of a joke, even though it’s true.

Actually I was a high-school dropout (I did eventually finish, and later in life went o community college, though never got a degree). But I read extensively, and I loved space, astronomy, geography, studied WWII extensively, all on my own. School wasn’t teaching me the things I wanted to know. And when I found I could spell better than my 11th grade English teacher, I kind of felt I was wasting my time.

My only regret was not taking more mathematics, that’s my serious weak point. But while High-school was having us read the obligatory Shakespeare (which is a very bad thing to read when you’re trying to learn English, it’s SO hard to follow), I was reading Tolstoi, Tennyson, Tolkien (heh, all T names), Poe, et al. My father is very well-read, and I was reading the books he left behind, essentially.

But I doubt the babble-thumpers were reading things like this, but were spending all their time in “babble study”, what a fucking waste of time. If you can’t take it at face value, then it’s not worth studying, IMHO.

Who exactly is the atheist in the video? He has P-Funk on his shirt, but that probably isn’t his name.

I’d like to know so I can compliment and encourage him directly.

I would like to know who the man in the P-Funk shirt is, too! I will do a bit of digging around today and see if I can find out.

  27. Stardust:

Jimmer, the second link to P-Funk’s responses while watching the second CNN broadcast is funny to watch…his reactions are pretty intense sometimes the way he starts yelling at the television set. The very ending of the video in the link you provided shows his exasperation.

  28. jimmer:

Yeah, pretty good stuff. He is probably wondering where all the traffic is coming from.

  29. ChuckA:

Revenant…Again, thanks for sharing such personal info.
    “Do we need a hug?”
Actually, your comments about your own pretty amazing self-education motivation, reminds me of the fact that quite a few extremely intelligent, well known people, left traditional schooling very early on. Let’s face it, most learning in life is done outside of formal schooling…including beyond college. Your interesting comment about your reading ventures hits the mark on that account.
Again, I appreciate your comments about MY personal story; and for filling me in on yours.

I’m a Comcast Cable, and HBO subscriber; and one of the current comedy series is called “Extras”. It’s, as the title suggests; about extra actors, and their numerous frustrations.
In the first episode, the main character establishes, surprisingly, his atheism. He’s a rather cynical character actor who longs for serious acting roles. Somewhat into the series, he begins to get famous for the wrong shtick…silliness, with wigs and stupid dialogue etc. That being said, there’s a “Fame grabbing” line of his, which is treated as both funny AND as a kind of ‘albatross’ around his neck…that being:
    “Are we havin’ a laugh?”
The line, of COURSE, turns into his personal nightmare.
[I do recommend the series, by the way!...and...
Yeah, that kind of stuff is hard to describe in brief, if others haven't seen the series!]

    So, anyway…Revenant…
Are we havin’ a laugh? ;)

Revenant, our kids had the same complaints about school. We allowed our sons to leave high school when the oldest was a sophomore and the younger one a freshman, and our daughter didn’t go to high school at all, leaving junior high in the middle of 8th grade. They were all honor students, but not really doing anything but memorization and regurgitation for standardized tests. They were all bored and had no time to explore other things. So, we set them free.

They all did a combo of independent study/community college while high-school age and got their A.A.s when everyone else their age was graduating from their high school and they had the time to explore many other subjects, and read all kinds of literature that high schoolers don’t have time for. Everyone was telling us we were ruining their lives because they did not take the normal path. We ignored them and hoped what we were doing was the right thing…it was.

My daughter now has a Masters in Music from Yale University (she did her undergrad at Curtis in Philadelphia, a conservatory), and our oldest has a degree in Physics and our middle son has an AA in Fine Art but when he went on for his B.F.A. he hated it and quit. He is a semi-truck driver now, but had a near perfect on the math portion of his ACT. He is taking courses in accounting now to try to get out of trucking.

School is to get a piece of paper in order to get certain jobs that require it. Real learning happens on your own and we are continually learning all of our lives. It is very admirable when people seek to learn on their own and not just selections by others who want to spoon feed students what they think is important. I have also found in my years working in education that many students who drop out of school are very intelligent people. They just hate the bullshit.

I know what you mean about being able to spell better than the teachers. While there are good teachers, there are also bad ones. Our daughter was in 7th grade and being taught U.S. Government by a P.E. teacher who was teaching multiple subjects. He was actually marking questions correct that she got wrong! When we brought this to his attention he said, “she passed, what’s your problem?”

  31. Revenant:

Always havin’ a laugh, Chuck! ;)

I know what you mean Stardust.

My 10th grade PE teacher was functionally illiterate. When he read from the health books he could barely get through a sentence, and larger words were pretty much impossible. He was a nice guy, and I really felt sorry for him. I considered going to him in private and offering to read in class when it was required, but my own innate shyness and extreme fear of speaking in public prevented me.

Looking back, I was a fucking basket case, lol. But somehow never turned to drugs or alcohol.

  32. karen:

PFunk reminds me a little of the guy who did the little bit o’ rap on the Radio Song video by REM. I dunno. It’s been a long time since i’ve seen it.

It took me about an hour to load this vid, but it was well worth the wait.
Roll on, PFunk, I think I luv you!

Love that, Star, and kudos to everyone who had the nerve to educate themselves “outside the box!” I credit my extra-curricular education with getting me through school relatively rational and sane (especially since I went to a fundy school!). Mythology, for example, was truly a mind- and life-saver for me…

  38. The Old Git:

School is to get a piece of paper in order to get certain jobs that require it.

I don’t know what the situation is in the US, but over here, if you dare to be too critical of ‘received opinion’ - even when you can substantiate your argument with logic and evidence - you will find yourself in conflict with most of the ‘award authorities’. And in some respects, the higher the prospective degree, the more the determined the opposition to truly original research.

In other words, until your Doctorate has been awarded, you must learn to ‘play the game’, and it is only afterwards that you can begin to develop genuine originality.

But even once one has become tenured in a faculty, the bitching and back-biting from professional colleagues continues, especially in the so-called ‘humanities’, all of which rather defeats the purpose of an educational establishment in my opinion.

Besides, I have nothing but the utmost respect for autodidacts - after all, I am one myself in many spheres - and true amateurs who are genuinely knowledgeable about their chosen subject(s).

    Only fools disregard such people.

  39. Stardust:

In other words, until your Doctorate has been awarded, you must learn to ‘play the game’, and it is only afterwards that you can begin to develop genuine originality.

TOG - It’s the same here. I had about a half a dozen professors in my whole university education that encouraged original thinking and debate. My worst professors were the ones who wanted students to sit silent and listen to them drone on and on with their opinions while puffing up their self-inflating egos. (I have a brother-in-law who is a Ph.D in English and thinks very highly of himself while he looks down upon students as idiots for merely being students.)

I was an art major when I first went to college. A couple of the art instructors were so full of themselves that no originality was allowed and most of the students’ works were similar to his. Those who were different (though they were much better artists than the instructors IMO) received low scores (I don’t know how one can give a certain grade to an artist anyway…it’s all subjective in the eye of the beholder.)

  40. Adrian Clement:

I’m an atheist, and I’d love to live forever.

Scientists decided to cut pluto. Wow, God exists, and science is flawed (sarcasm). As far as I know it was religion that kept the earth from orbiting around the sun.
