Live Dangerously, My Friends

4 April 2008 by Bob

Ah, the joys of living in Illinois…

Found this very revealing story over at The Friendly Atheist.

It seems Rep. Monique Davis is just a HOOT!:

Davis: I don’t know what you have against God, but some of us don’t have much against him. We look forward to him and his blessings. And it’s really a tragedy — it’s tragic — when a person who is engaged in anything related to God, they want to fight. They want to fight prayer in school. I don’t see you (Sherman) fighting guns in school. You know?

I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it’s dangerous–

Sherman: What’s dangerous, ma’am?

Davis: It’s dangerous to the progression of this state. And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if you’ll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

Sherman: Thank you for sharing your perspective with me, and I’m sure that if this matter does go to court—

Davis: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon.

Intolerance, thy name is xianity…

UPDATE: If you really want to hear what a self-righteous twit sounds like, just listen to the audio

UPDATE II: Email for this person can be found here. Remember to be nice.

Notice that she never answers the question about “what is dangerous?” She just basically blows off the question or is so programmed she doesn’t “receive” the question into her tiny brain and just basically says “I hate you, get out”.

  2. Sarah:

What an idiot. It’s scary that these people are even allowed in the government.

We’ve got a nutjob Republican Representative over here in Iowa, too. His name is Steve King.

  3. Raindogzilla:

This’ll really fix her wagon; I’d like to keep jeebus out of schools AND guns out of the hands of kids. So there!

And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!

Yes, it is. Dangerous to the house of cards that is your worldview.

  4. Fritzy:

    ^Well said RDZ.

As I just said on a previous post, and have said in discussions/arguments for many years, if an idea/collection of ideas is truly excellent, a proponent of that idea has nothing to fear as far as that idea holding up to critical dialog.

  5. Stardust:

Why can’t her god keep guns out of school? Why can’t god botherers keep guns out of the hands of their children?…wait…god botherers are pro-gun…

The only thing the atheist was “destroying” was the steadfastness of her faith. It’s better to do away with us than to have us cause them to question their beliefs.

  6. Bob:

I’ve posted an updated link to the audio.

Man, what a self-righteous twit. She works herself up into a frenzy.

    How nice.

“If you think she’s an idiot, you should see her constituents.”

  7. Robert H:

Of course, if Sherman had acted the way Monique Davis did, it would have been a huge outrage. Every major news outlet would be playing the audio over and over, and Pat Robertson would be using it a “proof” that atheists are intolerant monsters. But since the evangelical Christian was the bigot in this situation, nobody cares.

  8. Eve:

And what the fuck is she talking about when she accuses him of not going to court to keep guns out of schools? Guns in schools are already illegal, so what does she expect him to go to court about it for?

    Fundyism =/= sense!

  9. ChuckA:

I think Monique Davis might just be in the latest running for having her picture in all Dictionary/Encyclopedia publications, next to…(you guessed it?)…
    “bitch”! As in “ignorant bitch”!
And this bitch…erm…gal…is working on a Doctorate?
    In what, exactly…’prey’ tell…
    Theocratic Fascism?

I must admit, as a resident ‘Illinoisan’; (My, how noisioas?) that I was totally ignorant of her political presence…
from 1987, no less! YIKES! How fucked up is our government…at ALL levels!
Yes…the emphasis in November, on total Separation of Church and State needs to be SIGNIFICANTLY emphasized…and LOUDLY!!!
As opposed to what we’ve been subjected to, for far too long:
“Total separation of Politicians’ brains from any true…rational thought”
    Perhaps, something like…?…
“WAKE THE FUCK UP, YOU TOTALLY IGNORANT, DELUSIONAL, RELIGIOUSLY BRAINWASHED MORONS!
    “Henya, henya…AARGITY, AARGH!”
    (waves imaginary steam from visage)
[Please excuse my shouting, dear GifSters!]
    Yeah…
That outburst would surely lose me some more friends (fiends?)!
I don’t know about you guys, but none of my few remaining friends (associates?) really know about GifS…
or DO they? I can imagine hearing them saying something like:
“Hmmm…is THAT asshole ChuckA the asshole Chuck that I know? If so…no more funny emails or any association for THAT fuckhead!”
Ya know something? I think I just may have hit on a revelatory insight.
    I mean:

  10. Neil:

Let’s compare some quotes, shall we?

    Representative Ignorant Lying Shitbag Davis:
I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it’s dangerous–

    President Lincoln:
“My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.”

“The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession.”

And one from his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln:
“Mr. Lincoln had no hope, and no faith, in the usual acceptation of those words.”

Hmmmm….a chrisitan politician who is willfully ignorant of, or else knowingly misrepresenting the character of the most famous leader associated with her own state. And this from a Democrat…sigh…

Her shared delusions make it seem morally acceptable to take cues from the republican handbook. Demonize, misrepresent, and ignore, rinse and repeat. If she is really trying to “understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois,” why doesn’t she try picking up a fucking book instead of wildly accusing thoughtful people of child endangerment? Have her delusions left her illiterate as well as bigoted and irrational?

I’m sure that many here are already aware of Lincoln’s religious status, but I thought a couple of demonstrative quotes would be appropriate.

  11. Todd:

Methinks someone’s email server needs to be stress tested.

  12. Zipi:

    Exactly, Eve!

I was listening at her and I kept on wondering whether it is legal and standard for students to bring guns to schools in Illinois (probably thanks to some atheist who ammended the Constitution just for that).

  13. Old Viking:

Hysteria is always their reaction to calm, reasoned opposition.

  14. Stardust:

Just listened to the audio…the bitch starts out in a softly condescending voice and then it crescendos to this high-pitched psycho crazy-ass screaming.

Hysteria is always their reaction to calm, reasoned opposition.

This is true, even talking to fundies here in blogland. Try reasoning with them and they flip out and go beserk. I think it’s because they are paranoid we will take their Jeebus away.

  15. Scorpious:

Try reasoning with them and they flip out and go beserk. I think it’s because they are paranoid we will take their Jeebus away.

No, we just want to take the extreme ones away to the funny farms out in the middle of nowhere.

  16. Stardust:

I think Rep Davis needs to go back to school for some refresher courses in U.S. and State government if she thinks Illinois was founded on gawd.

And it’s always puzzling seeing an African American being bigoted against a particular group of people. They, more than anyone, should know what it’s like.

  17. AtheistUnderMask:

Wow. That’s really all I have to say.

  18. Karen:

I like the guy in the audio who steered Sherman away from responding to Davis’ projectile vomiting. “Uh, let’s just keep focused on the issue before us…” (Try to ignore the demented Rep. Davis as she foams at the mouth, and rocks back and forth muttering ‘We ARE a Christian nation, We ARE a Christian nation…”)

  19. MoeNeigh:

Stardust wrote: “And it’s always puzzling seeing an African American being bigoted against a particular group of people. They, more than anyone, should know what it’s like.”

Yes, Star, I was amazed a few years ago when black ministers here in Houston got their congregations to turn out in droves to soundly ban gay marriage by getting it “indelibly” written into the Texas constitution. Of all the demographics, theirs was the largest to support the ban with their votes. Does not compute!

  20. Fritzy:

^ Bigotry is banal; Anyone can be a perpetrator.

  21. original jimmy dean:

So this bitch actually sponsored a bill related to banning metal detectors in K – 6 (did I read the text of the bill wrong in the link to her bio?) So maybe she is trying to live down some claims that she is soft on guns in school… I’m not saying I know the best way to keep guns out of school or anything, but hate monger politicians probably dont help with violence.

Really this is typical Chicago politician crap.

As far as the idea of expecting tolerance from someone based on them being an “democrat african american” (or based on their being grouped into any collectivist group for that matter) goes, do not kid yourself.

At least she knows what the state of illinois put on their license plate, “land of lincoln”. Sadly, its probably crap like repeating “land of lincoln” and talking the talk on making schools safe that gets her constituents to vote for her. Of course, connections to large churches in the area probably dont hurt either…

  22. original jimmy dean:

Sorry for calling her a bitch i should have used something more creative like… “noble protector of the great state of illinois prayer tradition”

  23. Bob:

    Hey, just found her email…

Go here, and tell her what you think. (Please be nice.)

  24. JJR:

Neil, thanks for the Lincoln quotes. Someone should send her a good biography of Lincoln that doesn’t shy away from detailing his irreligious views in a frank, open, and honest manner (with appropriate pages bookmarked and passages highlighted).

I used to have an African American colleague at my former workplace, really cool guy, family man, etc, and ostensibly Democrat. But he voted for Bush in 2004 because of the whole gay marriage thing, and he would go on extended homophobic rants justified by religion to anyone who would listen, comparing gays to alcoholics. Really p*ssed me off.
Way to vote against your own economic interests on account of religious bigotry…

The anti-gun rhetoric is just nonsense. Illinois doesn’t have any form of legal concealed carry laws, it’s already one of the most gun-controlled states in the union. Only Washington DC has tighter (soon to be unconstitutional, thank goodness) laws.

I may be otherwise ultra-liberal but I’m also a Texan, so hell, I favor the right-to-carry for teachers/coaches/principals in the workplace, as well as professors and university students who are of age (21 and up).

So would this representative favor censoring the views of Lincoln himself in the Land of Lincoln, if she learned what they really were?
Seems she would be logically compelled to do so, if she wants to remain consistent in her views.

  25. Ex Partiate:

this is a pathetic form of animal life, she does not deserve to hold any public office, best place for her would be cleaning out cesspools,by hand
