Calif. Supreme Court Decision on Gay Marriage Riles Religious Right
16 May 2008 by Stardust
Don’t these fundies have better things to do like feed the poor, help the homeless or some earthquake survivors or something? Or maybe go take a few U.S Government courses at the local community college for a refresher on what separation of church and state actually means.
Religious Right activists want to see their religious perspective on marriage imposed on everyone.
From Joseph L. Conn at Americans United:
Marriage Spat: Calif. Supreme Court Decision Sparks Church-State Discussion
The California Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage has opened an important discussion about the relationship between religion and government. The justices in the court majority made it clear that they were ruling in favor of civil-marriage equality and not religion. Religious communities will remain free to perform same-sex marriages or not, as their theology dictates.
A lot of people rightly see that as an important expression of judicial respect for the separation of church and state.
*snip*
According to Baptist Press, the Rev. Barrett Duke, vice president for governmental affairs for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said he was “saddened for the people of California.”“The California Supreme Court ruling not only overruled the very clear will of the people, it also proposes to overrule God’s design,” Duke said. “These judges may think they know more about marriage than the rest of us, but I am confident they don’t know more about marriage than God. Marriage is the union of one man and one woman….That’s not only my opinion and the opinion of most of the people in this country, it’s God’s opinion, and His opinion overrules the opinion of any judges.”
The Rev. Clyde Grubbs, pastor of the Pasadena’s Throop Unitarian Universalist Church says:
“Our religion is in favor of (gay) people getting married, and they are saying that under someone else’s religion, that is wrong,” said Grubbs. “There is no secular reason for that position, so it must be a religious test and a violation of the First Amendment.”
The Religious Right needs to give this up and just let people live their lives.

One can’t help but wonder what the hell is going on with these folks in terms of their priorities. As servants of the big daddy in the sky, it seems to me that their efforts are better spent helping the hundreds of thousands of poor folks who have been hit by quakes and storms over the past week rather than bitching about personal choices that adults make about how they want to live their lives.

Activist Judges! Activist Judges! The sky is falling! RUN!
OK, got that out of the way. Maybe more states will follow suit now. OK, Floriduh won’t-it’ll be under water before it allows gay marriage, but maybe some other more rationally bent states will follow. Hurray for CA!
Aw, so sad. Sucks to be gawd right now, I bet.

I was so happy when I saw this story on Yahoo. It really warms my heart when the good guys finally gain new ground against religious oppression.
I’m not surprised by the bigots. I bet we’ll hear more hysterical screaming soon.
16 May 2008, on 1:38 pm
I still find it ironic that these same people once opposed interacial marriage for biblical reasons.
They also opposed the suffragette movement, the abolishing of slavery and a lot of other progressive issues based on their belief in the bible.
Crazy.

Rick Santorum is not happy.
He still can’t marry his dog.

“Marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Thats not only my opinion and the opinion of most of the people in this country, its Gods opinion, and His opinion overrules the opinion of any judges.
the Rev(olting) Barrett Duke”
Well, you just tell your god to “Come On Down” and appear to all of us and tell us what he thinks. He can personally “overrule” any judges who disagree. I know I would listen to god in person.
Oh, that’s right, your god doesn’t exist so he can’t “Come On Down”.
Any god who needs followers to do his bidding is no god at all.

Cue flocks of divorce lawyers relocating to California to serve all those heterosexually married folks who’s marriages will now crumble into disputes over custody and community property under the onslaught of teh gays getting hitched.
The “sanctity” of marriage? I might actually buy that as an argument if right around half of all marriages today weren’t ending- that’s right ending- in divorce. Or, if I couldn’t get hammered in Vegas and married by Elvis. Or, if there weren’t 13 year-old girls out there in lunatic cults being forced into it by men old enough to be their creepy uncles. Sanctity, my ass.
Way to go California Supreme Court!

Karen,
LOL! That says it all doesn’t it? Sucks to be gawd.
Same sex marriage has been legal here for a couple years now and last year a local government rep married his partner immediately after his re-election.
And yet life still goes on unchanged here in the heathen Great White North
16 May 2008, on 6:04 pm
In the Fray section of Slate, someone was moaning on and on about the standard definition of marriage and its historical relevance in society. Some one else responded with “won’t someone please think of the dictionaries?!!!”
I had a good chuckle
16 May 2008, on 6:47 pm
Let’s see now. Traditional marriage often involves psychological or physical abuse, infidelity, dysfunctional children, hostile divorce and similar delights. If fundies dislike gays so much you would think they would be happy to share such sanctity.
16 May 2008, on 7:36 pm
Woot! I was so happy when I was greeted on Yahoo news this morning that gay marriage had passed in California. Slowly, we are making progress.
16 May 2008, on 9:09 pm
Does it count as a gay marriage if I marry a lesbian? And has anyone looked into the forthcoming nuptials inolving Sen. John Cornyn and a box turtle?
16 May 2008, on 10:40 pm
Sen. John Cornyn and a box turtle
The actual quote by Cornyn was “[N]ow you must raise your children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on the same legal footing as man and wife.”
What is it with these RR people and their animal analogies? Kirk Cameron and his crocoduck, etc.
16 May 2008, on 11:58 pm
Yeah, but now gay box turtles can marry each other too. Victory!
I think it’s safe to assume that in the divorce between the man and the turtle, the turtle gets to keep the (its) house.
17 May 2008, on 12:40 am
And dammit, traditional biblical marriage is between one man and as many women as he can afford. I know many of the fundies haven’t read their holey book, but why do they think that we haven’t?
17 May 2008, on 1:03 am
I’ve often fancied myself a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Guess that means I can finally marry a woman in my state of residence now.
“the Rev. Religious Fucktard, vice president for governmental interference for the Southern Baptist Godbotherer’s “Ethics” & Religious Discrimination, said he was “saddened for the people of California.”
Does that mean he’s saddened for the “homos” too? Arrogant, patronizing asshole.
“The California Supreme Court ruling not only overruled the very clear will of the people…”
1. The will of the people 8 years ago.
2. The people of CA can will all they want–but they can’t make laws infringing on the civil rights of others–not even in a democracy. The courts were finally right in realizing this.
“…it also proposes to overrule God’s design.”
Prove this statement legally, scientifically or logically. Until you can, fuck off.
“These judges may think they know more about marriage than the rest of us…”
No, they no more about the law than most of us, asshole.
“but I am confident they don’t know more about marriage than God.”
What the fuck does gawd know–he’s never been married.
“Marriage is the union of one man and one woman.”
That’s not even true according to your own mythological tome. Can anyone say “King Solomon?”
“That’s not only my opinion and the opinion of most of the people in this country…”
Again, the people of this country can opine all they want–but they can’t limit civil rights. And constitutions were never meant to take away rights, but rather to protect them. If it were otherwise, we’d still have anti-miscegenation laws.
“it’s God’s opinion, and His opinion overrules the opinion of any judges.”
Except in a secular republic, where “His” opinion doesn’t mean shit. And I dare you to prove your statement with evidence, as you expect of your opponents.
I really can’t imagine the agony of going through one’s life, getting bent over whose various holes and appendages your neighbor’s junk mingles with. I mean seriously, get a life.
17 May 2008, on 1:48 am
RDZ, post #7: And how many of these morons who scream sanctity of marriage are on their 3rd+ marriage? How many of them have been taken to the cleaners by their spouse(s)? How many are now paying through the ass in child support?
If they really supported marriage they’d want to BAN divorce, not make it easier.

I’m having fun with this topic on a right wing blog. The blog owner is an atheist, and she is against the decision, even though I’ve thrown the kitchen sink at her.
17 May 2008, on 8:14 am
Just a note for all the KKKristian lurkers. Gay marriage? it’s sorta like abortion; you don’t want a gay spouse–you’re not required to have one.

“Foist”…A few comments, if I may:
Fuck all Religions…and government has no business poking into people’s personal lives! That includes dictating ANYTHING regarding marriage…or…sexuality…or reproduction…or end of life choices…zama, zama. I’m totally pro-choice! Even regarding the end of life issues…’nough said, I think.
Yeah…as I’m convinced all you regular atheist GifSters do…
I ACTUALLY…THINK! OK…I admit…I’m addicted to Rational Thought!
Can THAT be wrong?
Now…Ummm…Atheist Jew?…RE your “right wing blog” link…
)
Reading through those myriad comments just reinforces my long held opinion about the human race…
(This is nothing personal, folks!
“It’s” fucking nuts! OR…perhaps to be more charitable…and to direct the comment more accurately to the source?…
Religion IS mental illness.
Yeah…I know…if the human race is nuts…it applies equally to me!
What!…I’m an equal opportunity…insulter? You know I’m kidding in all this…Well…at least SOMEWHAT!
I long ago accepted that, albeit, amateur psychiatrist conclusion; and perhaps, as a side effect of my old(er) age; I’m much more at ease with something I’ve often alluded to…I’m pretty sure it’s attributed to that poor old, long dead, Nietzsche:
“Existence IS absurd!”
Any way one parses it; it’s frustratingly impossible to ever really make any REAL (final) rational sense of it…or…”get a handle on it”…or…
to ever put to rest the ever elusive “Unanswered Question”…
WHY?…or maybe…
WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT?
What’s that?…Fucking IS the point?
OK…I can ‘handle’ that!
I know one thing for sure; it’s a total waste of time batting ones head against the proverbial wall arguing with Fundies; of ANY ilk. I guess some of you might find it fun; but, as you also probably realize from your own experience…nobody ever changes their mind in the heat of a…erm…’discussion’.
So much for debating? Even…ala Dawkins vs. various boneheads…would that be ‘Master-debating’?
Does that eventually cause blindness?
Most hardcore fundies are, in my opinion…totally, and perhaps even TERMINALLY…rationally ‘batshit’ crazy, …even tantamount to being…nearly, and hopelessly…brain-dead. You can ’see’ it in their lack of logic, their poor spelling & grammar, and certainly their apparent total lack of any extended level of recent research in historical, archaeological, ‘modern’ scientific, cosmological (?), philosophical subject matters. Oh…and lest I forget their often…
“deer in the headlights looking expression”?
AND…as we all know so well…they don’t even know they’re cherished Bible (Babble) as well as we atheists!
“There I go again!” I really have to start a handy file on this oft repeated “mantra” of complaints; you know…to cut and paste the same old diatribes.(?)
BUT…BUT…BUTT?…my fellow atheist(s)…”Coitenly”…
“Whatever turns you on!”…? And by all means…always TRY, at least, to…
HAVE FUN!
At least for me, whilst lingering here at GifS; I feel significantly less insane than I would feel being stranded alone in this baffling, somewhat overwhelming Universe…(feigns nail biting!)
H-E-L-P ME!!!
(ala the Movie (original version) “The Fly”?…clings to Web…whilst turning up imaginary echo function & extreme reverb!)
OH…ALL RIGHT!…as per usual:
“The Fly (1958) Horror Movie - Help me! Help Me!”

On that note:
Happy Weekend!

For all the frothing at the mouth these asshats did when Massachusetts opened up gay marriage, you would have thought that MA was going to become a Left Behind style battleground.
Huh. They were wrong.

Im having fun with this topic on a right wing blog. The blog owner is an atheist, and she is against the decision, even though Ive thrown the kitchen sink at her.
TAJ — What a bunch of asshats in that discussion thread! Especially the doofus named Gawfers. He is a Gawfer already… a total moron.
And it pisses me off, even though I am not gay, when they equate homosexuality with murderers, child abusers, etc.
(TAJ…I should have stayed away…I am getting sucked in. I should do like Sean always told me to do “back away, Star…slowly back away”. LOL )
19 May 2008, on 5:33 pm
TAJ, I have given up over there at the rightwing nutjob blog. There seems to be a bunch of eight-year-olds who aren’t really interested in the topic being discussed.
