Religious Right vie for GOP leader slot
6 January 2009 by StardustWhile some may think that the Religious Right is dying down, they are not giving up. They are still attempting to control the Republican Party so they can keep their influence in America’s government.
Power Play: Religious Right Flexes Muscle In Race For GOP Leader
The Washington Times, a conservative Washington, D.C., daily owned by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon that is well connected to Religious Right groups, reported yesterday that a number of high-profile Religious Right leaders have endorsed Kenneth Blackwell for the slot.
*snip*
The Times reported that Blackwell has “won endorsements from such religious conservatives such as Phyllis Schlafly, Tim LaHaye, James Dobson and Tony Perkins.”
*snip*
So we’ve actually come to the point where a leading contender to head the Republican Party is a former employee of one of the nation’s largest Religious Right organizations. Yet we’re being told the Religious Right’s power is on the wane?
But wait, there’s more. Six men are vying for the GOP’s top slot. Three of the others – Michael Steele and Katon Dawson and Chip Saltsman – have ties to the Religious Right as well.
The “Party of Gawd” leaders meet at the end of the month to choose their new leader. Will the religious whackadoos prevail? As Rob Boston says “stay tuned.”

6 January 2009, on 8:23 pm
The GOP has worked long and hard to be the party of the religious right. They haves more than achieved this distinction. They are now the party of the religio-nazis. And not much of anyone else. The party has totally marginalized itself. Naming a wingnut to head them up will simply confirm this impression, and deepen the hole they’ve dug for themselves.
7 January 2009, on 12:24 am
Bloody hell, what next? The party of God ? surely you jest, is that a joke or for real ? how the fuck do you have a political party based on a fairytale, is there a Party of Easter Bunny, or The Santa party, what the fuck is happening there, I came across a site yesterday run by BULL, LOL, thats his name, his daughter is a US service person {navy} and he is all for doing the Muslims big time which would be ok if it wasn’t for his obvious fruit cakery sky dad Xian leanings, another anti anyone who wants his guns tripper from the sewer, since 911 they have all come out of the drains, it seems that the right have really made in roads from where we stand as observers here in OZ, we have the Family First party here ultra right Fascist Xians who everyone regards as roaches, exept for the .04% of the population who voted for them, we just laugh, FUCK I’m so glad I’m here, PHEW!!!!!!!!!!…….Party of God now I’ve heard everything.
7 January 2009, on 1:05 am
I think these people are truly mentally deficient. Possibly even mildly retarded. Exccept for the religious leaders who I think are fully aware of the swindle they are playing out.
7 January 2009, on 3:59 am
Actually, the Party of God is the unfortunately named Constitution Party. Google it and read it’s platform. It’s entirely unconstitutional.
7 January 2009, on 4:46 am
Jesus fucking christ, I just read up on this bunch of mendacious lunatic hypocrites, they are so fucking stupid it beggars belief, I’m an Australian and even I having studied the US constitution know that what they represent is constitutionally criminal, this is truly the most stupid bunch of morons ever, I think we need to have an award category for Retards of the year, an Atheist grammy thingy, don’t get me started on the fricken grammy’s, another air head farce, The constitution Party, that’s like some Nazi’s saying to some jews, hey it’s fine we won’t hurt you, a big fat fuckin lie, a whopper, the ultimate porky, now I really have heard it all, fuck a duck, the US is being hi jacked by airheads, I guess Paris the fucking freak Hilton is going to be the next president if this is anything to go by, damn that’s sad………………………

7 January 2009, on 6:02 am
Well Hoffy, I got something else to piss you off: Go google the Confederate Constitution. It makes an appeal to Almighty God right in their preamble.
7 January 2009, on 8:16 am
Jesus laugh, fuck their comedians right? they are aren’t they? their serious aren’t they, the confederate constitution, well I’ll be buggered they are so demented that they have based their lunatic constitutional preamble on that of some red neck fuck heads from the village of the damned, damn can it get much worse? no I can’t believe it, it has to be a sick joke, sort of like saying George Bush is a nice bloke, I’m speechless except for all the writing of course LOL, well that’s it then, the US is now officially doomed, it was bad enough finding out that the new pres was a sky daddy worshipper and now this stuff, I’m of to the pub with santa and the easter bunny, oh hey jesus is here as well, gotta go……………………….
7 January 2009, on 9:44 am
Pat Robertson, John Hagee, et, al…………………….. Please suck the shit directly from my asshole and then go DIE & GO MEET YOUR FUCKING GEEBUS
7 January 2009, on 9:46 am
This is actually a good thing……….. America has finally woken up to the HYPOCRACY OF THESE MOTHER-FUCKERS, and will therefor will never again elect another DUMBKRISTIAN ASSHOLE Republican.
7 January 2009, on 10:39 am
There is absolutely nothing dead or dying about the religious right. As a matter of fact, the election of Barrack Obama over Hilary Clinton indicates to me that there’s still a strong religious persuasion in the Democratic Party. When Obama sited passages from the Bibble during his campaign I think he clearly shows on what side of the fence he stands. Lesbians and gays certainly don’t have any reason to rejoice. Now if either party elected a homosexual leader we might have some reason to hope for change. That really would be an indication that religious ideas are waning. I think the only change in the USA is as superficial as the color of a man’s skin.
7 January 2009, on 10:52 am
When Obama sited passages from the Bibble during his campaign I think he clearly shows on what side of the fence he stands.
Lynda, I agree totally with that. Obama has shared his evangelical religious beliefs long before he was even Senator. He has said repeatedly for years that he talks to and listens to Jeebus telling him what to do. Finding Jeebus is “what turned his life around.” People were saying it was an act. Then he said he was keeping Bushie’s Faith Based Bullshit. And he then chose Rick Warren to say the magical invocation at the inauguration. He has said that he doesn’t condone homosexuality but must uphold the equal rights of others (and by palling around with one of the biggest proponents of gay marriage when there are other “men of Gawd” to choose from, he chooses Warren.)
I think the only change in the USA is as superficial as the color of a man’s skin.
And I agree with this, also. Change? Let’s hope it is superficial if it isn’t going to be positive changes for us, like keeping the RR at bay.
He never said what big change was going to happen. Just that magical word that got him elected because people have lost hope and he said the right things they want to hear. What was our option though? McInsane in the Membrane and Sidekick Sundayschool Sally? Putting them both side-by-side, Obama appeared to be the obvious lesser of two evils. But I was never happy with his kissing up to the RR and now he continues to do so when he doesn’t have to. Hopefully one of the “changes” he is talking about isn’t bringing more Jeebus belief to the country. By public prayer and hobnobbing with the big Evangelical con-artists he is showing that might be one of his desired changes. We will have to wait and see.

Stardust?…
I’d change the “Party of Gawd” name to:
“The Party of Complete Fucking, Idiotic, Fools!”…
OK, this is very tangential, I admit…
like many ideas that I get, I get them whilst I’m “sojourning” in the bathroom…(water closet?)…
Just earlier today (1/2 an hour ago?) I was contemplating the evolutionary history of the planet; you know…the vicious era of dinosaurs…the totally predatory nature of all Earthly life…the almost total destruction of life on Earth, even SEVERAL times, over billions of years, from asteroid impacts, etc.
Point being…considering the verifiable Scientific evidence of all that’s occurred on this “Predatory Planetary System”, ANY notion, whatsoever, of it being “created” by some so-called invisible, “Spiritual”, god-like being is tantamount to accepting an obviously humongous-like monstrous act of creation, indeed; and the worship of said being, would be nothing more than the worship of a monster…a Satanic-like, total fuckhead style “god”.
In other words; one would have to be a totally, brains up the ass, ignorant “Fool” to accept that monstrous a notion.
My conclusion…(to borrow a famous line used so often against us atheists; with an ironic twist, of course)…
“Only a Fool says in his heart that there IS a god!”
Follow me on one more?…
Also…RE the old lie about “There are no atheists in Foxholes!”
We all know that’s total bullshit; one need only to check the Site based on the exposing of that total myth.
Like…
http://www.atheistfoxholes.org/
BUT…I also submit…A possible (joking, of course) reason that there would be no atheists in foxholes is:
1) Most atheists are too smart to end up in fucking foxholes following some religious idiot’s insane warmongering leadership.
2) A military leader (who’s secretly an atheist) purposely sends Xtians into foxholes as a way of decreasing the population of moronic, delusional fuckheads.
3) (similar to #2) Any atheist who gets sucked into Military service, tries hard to get assigned to something like…oh, I dunno…
“The Band”?; or, of course some detail which is far away from the front lines. Or maybe, just following Dubya’s example…and ending up, perhaps, safely back in the tent, enjoying cocktails…and telling war jokes? [Monty Python, or even "Black Adder" style, of course]
4) Actually, this is where I ran out of ideas, wiped my arse, and flushed the toilet…and exited the “Water closet”…fired up the computer…
[Perhaps, ala, Obama's: "All fired (farted) up...and ready to go?"] and….
WTF!… “Have a nice day?”
7 January 2009, on 12:43 pm
Yes, Stardust, given the choices US citizens had during the last election Obama is the lesser of two evils. I still do not comprehend how Hilary Clinton lost in her bid for the leadership.
What is really worrying to we observers from north of the border is that McCain and Palin were even considered as leaders of the country. How the fuck could they even manage to get into their present political offices, let alone run for the highest office? That is really freaky!
The next four years definitely promise to be interesting.
BTW, I don’t see the US media covering the campaign in the UK where buses have this statement on their sides, “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”

Your spot on Lynda, even here in OZ the religious right are now a voice, since 911 everyone has got scared so the sheeple are all joining a gang, be it Xian or Islam {not beef} LOL, the bus campaign is great but its stirred up some controversy in the UK with Xian Tards whinging, boo hoo, boo hoo, this morning on our news Xian fruits have attacked and fire bombed a medical clinic here in Perth, suspected abortion clinic, we are alarmed as are the medical staff the next target, it’s bizzarre that these lunatics attack and have killed staff previously and yet that’s their beef, Murder, as they see it, so they go and commit murder, for fucks sake, hypocrites but hey what’s new, that’s religion for you, praising the lord one day, out doing some killing the next, yay what a wholesome club they are………………………..
7 January 2009, on 7:03 pm
I still do not comprehend how Hilary Clinton lost in her bid for the leadership.
I don’t either. I voted for Hillary in the primaries. She is probably as baffled as we are.
As far as the U.S. media not covering the atheist bus slogans in the UK, well, they aren’t going to do that because of all the god botherers here who would boycott news stations and newspapers that report this in a positive light. In many ways, the US is as backwards as Muslim fundies in the Middle East. Anything negative said about their imaginary friends and they are on the verge of forming lynch parties.
7 January 2009, on 7:43 pm
Hey Lynda! Guess what is in Yahoo News today here in the US? I was wrong!
British buses spread godless message in atheist campaign I haven’t seen it on television yet, though.
Holy crap! 800! I don’t think we could get the message on 8 buses here in all of the US.
7 January 2009, on 8:51 pm
The next thing we’ll see is some fruit blowing up an infidel bus, that’s the problem, Tards think that by killing and threatening to harm they can extort their own way, its got people to scared to even voice an opinion, we’re supposed to be living in a democracy but it’s being hi jacked into a theocracy by threat, a subtifuge, violence is the tool of the religious, it is the legacy of those to stupid to see logic……………………
7 January 2009, on 8:54 pm
and how come every fuckin Tard seems to be a gun fruit, what’s that about??????????
8 January 2009, on 12:21 am
The religious right will probably see one of their own heading the GOP. These people are, if nothing else, tenacious in their anti-rational efforts, and it would appear that the libertarian free-market variety of Rethug is either complacent enough to acquiesce to the christards in favor of a few dollars more on their tax return, or have given up altogether on the party once and for all and migrated to the Libertarian Party.
To Stara–really? Are you guys all one-trick ponies? Do you really think none of us have been exposed to John 3:16-17 before? For fucks sake; we watch sporting events. I’ve read the entire Bible several times. That is precisely WHY I am an atheist–the Bable is a morally repugnant piece of literature, if one is reading it with the idea of it having any say in the realm of morality. A Xtian quoting the wHoly Bable only drives the nail deeper into that coffin.
8 January 2009, on 12:52 am
I love Crappin Christ.
And remember The Religious Right are neither. The Moral Majority is neither.
And for a “loving” and “forgiving” god, He sure does have a hateful sadistic streak
8 January 2009, on 4:23 am
It’s not the party of God It’s “Gods Own Party’ GOP
Also the Religious Right have not gone away. If anything ths election has made them stronger in their attempt at taking over the U.S. (Terrorism as codified by the legislature). And while I would love to think that Obama will deliver I just can’t commit. Not yet. He had better prove himself first. Rick Warren IS NOT a mistake.
8 January 2009, on 4:55 am
Rick Warren is the pastor of saddle back church, a Megachurch full to the brim with raving fucking lunatics and you say it’s not a mistake jimmer, I’m just a bloke here in Australia but from here and what I’ve read up on this crazy it’s a mistake of the most HUMUNGUS variety, it says that Obama is a sellout or my conspiracy theory maybe has a bit of truth and he’s placating the ultra right so they won’t assasinate him, just a spooky thought we had, conspiracy theory’s are so much fun to play with, ooh ah ah arrr, said quickly for spooky effect, lol………………………..
8 January 2009, on 6:02 am
Hey thats my universal church triumphant handle, it’s a joke guys, don’t go weird on me …………
8 January 2009, on 11:20 am
Hoffy;
The choice of Warren was NOT a mistake, in that it was very calculated on the Obama administration’s part. Perhaps, as you said, it is to stave off the more fanatical that might consider taking out “god’s holy vengence” via a sniper rifle.
We can argue the merits of this choice, but there was a rhyme behind the reason. Perhaps it would be better to say this was no ACCIDENT.
And yes, my hopes for the Obama administration went down about two notches when he selected the mentally ill Rick Warren. Of course, the larger question is, in a supposedly secular republic, why do we even have a prayer at the innauguration of the President in the first place?
8 January 2009, on 11:21 am
Rick Warren IS NOT a mistake.
Jimmer, I’m not clear what you mean in your comment. You are saying that Warren is not a mistake for Obama, or not a mistake for the benefit of the Religious Right? If you say not a mistake for Obama, then what possible reason could he have for choosing a homophobic bigot to give the inauguration magical invocation when there are others, like Robert Schuller for one, who are more middle ground god botherers? If he is trying to unite, then why give this power hungry fundie asshat such a position of honor? I don’t get that at all except to think that Obama is a big fundie himself who hopefully will keep his word at upholding Roe vs Wade, equal rights for gays and all that stuff he said to get elected.
Many liberal organizations, like the Americans United for Separation of Church and State and Freedom From Religion Foundation as well as many equal rights groups are very upset by Obama’s choice of asshat Rick Warren. It’s as bad as if he chose Jerry Falwell if he were alive. I say giving this buttmunch such huge recognition will only fire up the Religious Right and they will be given hope that they can keep on getting those feet in the door. The nation will become a theocracy yet (as if it isn’t nearly already) and that won’t bother religious moderates because they are Jeebus lovers too.
8 January 2009, on 11:28 am
Of course, the larger question is, in a supposedly secular republic, why do we even have a prayer at the innauguration of the President in the first place?
These are the questions that secular groups would like answered and resolved. If someone wants to give a speech, that person should represent the WHOLE population of the USA. Not just one deluded bunch of religious nutters who have appointed themselves the morality police.
8 January 2009, on 1:16 pm
Religion is like the appendix. When it’s quiet you can ignore it. When it gets inflamed it can kill you. That’s when you have to get rid of it.
Did that make any sense or do I need more coffee?
8 January 2009, on 2:50 pm
Rich, I understand what you are saying. The only thing keeping many xian righties from killing the rest of us are laws and threat of death penalty or jail sentences. But sometimes they still do it anyway, kill for their god. As GW said he did. His imaginary friend told him to start a war which caused the deaths of tens of thousands…unnecessarily. So, No Rich, it was a good analogy.
8 January 2009, on 5:11 pm
Obama’s choice of Warren was fully calculated and the more I read and hear about Obama the more cynical I get. With that said, I still have quite a bit of optimism that he will begin to right the wrongs that have been done to our country. I do think that he is a religious man but not a fundamentalist and I would be disappointed but not surprised if he in fact has religious extremists on his team eventually.
Maybe his decision about Warren is also just him showing his true stripes. And we just are unable to figure out why. But I go for the simplest explanation. He chose Rick Warren because in some way he agrees with him. I know religious people who would NOT appease anyone in this choice. They would choose someone they personally know and trust.
The other possibility is that he has been compromised in some way and this Warren thing is just a symptom of more to come.
Think of it this way. Nancy Pelosi became speaker of the House. She stated that Impeachment was off the table. That was contrary to everything we all had hoped for. We had thought that with her as speaker then maybe something would be done to begin correcting the wrong direction we have been going. But that was not to be. Today we are worse off than when she took over speaker duties. Also from what I’m reading she is profitting quite nicely from the military Industrial complex. War profiteer that she has become. She’s been comprimised and is ineffective.
Rich
Good analogy. The appendix and religion are two things we no longer need but seem to have been stuck with. And you can never have too much coffee.
8 January 2009, on 5:18 pm
Hoffy
Pheeewww. You had me worried there. I get those churches mixed up I thought you meant, The Church Universal and Triumphant.http://www.allaboutcults.org/church-universal-and-triumphant.htm

8 January 2009, on 9:45 pm
I’m using the UCTAA handle as I like the idea of playing the crazy Reverand, anything that brings religion discredit, I’ve evn got a car park sign I use so that people think it’s a pastor parking in the disabled bays { oh yeah I am on a disability pension so I’m just bending the truth} it’s fun no one needs to know what SORT of pastor I am, el dente, lol……………………….
8 January 2009, on 10:38 pm
Rich-
Great analogy. I would add to that by saying both serve little useful purpose anymore and our species is probably just as well off without either one.
As for Obama’s choice–this man got elected largely because he is good at making smart, calculated choices. This guy is the worlds best known community organizer. When Palin et al attempted to discredit him by saying he was “just a community organizer,” it backfired, because community organizers possess a lot of the same qualities as successful POTUS’s. Obama does not make mistakes or take any choice lightly.
My guess–Obama does indeed share a lot of the same values as Warren–and he realizes that many in the black community do as well. Warren is very high profile, and is actually respected, or at least tolerated amongst some of the more moderate xtians in this country. And yes, I’m sure Obama is attempting to make friends with the devil (fundamentalists.) They wield political clout that belies their actual numbers. I would argue that on this last point, Obama is likely wasting his time and overestimating Warren’s ability to play as ace-in-the-hole. I don’t see Colorado Springs suburbanites falling in love with Obama, despite palling around with Warren, but hey, who knows.
This move may backfire, but no one has really ever lost political might by allying themselves with Christards like Warren. As for those of us on the left, Obama realizes most of us will acquiesce to this bit of obsequiesness because, well, he’s still better than Bush/Dick and McBush/Sundayschool Sarah.
8 January 2009, on 11:08 pm
If the selection of Rick Warren to pray at Obama’s inauguration is any indication of Obama’s decision-making skills Americans are screwed. Obama stated when he was asked about this questionable invite that he wants to be able to “disagree without being disagreeable”. What the hell does that mean? He can’t seriously think that he will not offend someone when he must stand up for the rights of others. What does he think Rosa Parks was doing on the bus? She was being offensive to bigoted whites. She dared to be disagreeable.
Rick Warren is a bigot through and through. Obama should be ashamed of himself!
9 January 2009, on 12:36 am
“Disagree w/out being disagreeable” is one of those buzz statements drummed up by public relations think tanks. It sounds pretty, safe and meaningful on the surface, but in reality is fatuous and downright dangerous. It’s being PC to the status quo, which often needs a kick in the rear. It’s the moto of the inert–it’s a call to inaction.
When confronting the irrational forces in society, there is no disagreeing without being disagreeable.
I used to be hopeful about Obama. I’ve about lost hope. I think he’s so scared to ruffle any feathers that he is effectively neutering himself.
Then again, he wouldn’t have been elected if he was an “uppity nigger,” and he’s fully aware of this fact. He’d stand as much chance as Jesse Jackson.
As I said, his pick of Warren was very calculated–to aggregate political capital. What I don’t think Obama has calculated is for what that political capital will be tender–to what ends he will actually be able to make progress.
In the end, much like the recent housing market, the capital he’s collecting may end up being over-inflated.

What a total waste of human lives, National (and World) treasure, and insane destructiveness!
AND…it ALL…FOREVER on this planet…goes back, in some way or another, to…one fucking tribal oriented RELIGIOUS belief against another. Ultimately, and totally…stupid!
