Carping Crusaders

31 January 2009 by Stardust

Obama tossed what we perceived to be a “crumb” to non-believers during his inauguration address when he said:

“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus – and non-believers,” Obama said. “We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth….”

But, apparently that tiny mention was enough to get the Religious Right cry-babying again:

Carping Crusaders: Religious Right Whines About Obama Shout Out To Non-Believers

Bishop Earl W. Jackson of Exodus Faith Ministries in Chesapeake, Va., said Obama, “seems to be trying to redefine American culture, which is distinctively Christian. The overwhelming majority of Americans identify as Christians, and what disturbs me is that he seems to be trying to redefine who we are.”

In agreement with Rob Boston of Americans United, Obama simply stated the fact that some Americans are non-believers. It doesn’t redefine anything about America itself with that statement of fact. The fact is that America has always been a diverse nation, with diverse beliefs and those of no beliefs at all. To shut us out along with other minority groups would then be trying to redefine America.

Boston continues:

Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, complained that Obama’s reference “puzzled” him because there are more Christians in the country than non-believers. (I’m puzzled by Mohler’s puzzlement. Does the fact that there are more Christians mean that members of minority views should never be mentioned?)

Another right-wing minister, the Rev. Cecil Blye of More Grace Ministries Church in Louisville, Ky., also criticized the Obama reference.

“It’s important to understand the heritage of our country, and it’s a Judeo-Christian tradition,” Blye said.

I would dispute that claim, but even if it were true, does that mean the president is wrong to acknowledge – even in passing – the many Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Pagans, etc., that live here?

I know what’s going on here. The Religious Right is so desperate to start attacking Obama that it will latch on to any reed, no matter how weak.

While Obama works to bring people together in a united America, the folks on the Religious Right are using their bigoted religious views as a divisive wedge.

Boston then writes a nice sentiment, but I doubt if the religious right will ever accept this fact about America:

It’s time for the Religious Right to grow up and realize that Americans believe lots of different things about God, and some don’t believe at all.

This sounds just like when they started screaming about a secular take over of the Congress because Stark isn’t Christian.

  2. jimmer:

Can’t you feel the LOVE? ROTFLMAO.
It certainly shows their true stripes and colors. The hypocritic assholes. I’ve been reading aobut this all week and I gotta say that their heads are about to explode. Can’t you see them in their churches whispering to each other,” that nigra is really a demon”. LOL

In other news the Republicans are showing that they too have become irrelevant. They did not vote for the stimulus and if it works wil get zero points for doing the right thing. Welcome to the Democratic Hegemon.

The Bible says xtians will be persecuted–and so, fundies have to find something that resembles persecution. This is certainly no “getting fed to the lions,” but beggers can’t be choosers, and they’ll take what they can get.

As was pointed out in this article, the irony of the whole thing is that these kkkristians are whining because they don’t get to lick the pie pan clean after consuming nearly the whole damned thing. And they didn’t get credit for baking the pie–even though they didn’t.

    Some persecution.

“KKKristian nation” or not, no one can deny that there are those of other faiths (or non-faith) in this country. Nor can anyone be taken seriously if they deny that everyone gets a voice in a democracy (even a representative democracy such as ours.) But folks like those quoted in the article above have never been too troubled by pesky facts.

The next four years will be hell for the Kristisites. A hell, mostly of their own construction.

    Jimmer;

How ’bout that plus-sized oxycontin-addled gas bag, Lush Rimjob, actually bloviating something to the effect that he “hopes” Obama fails. In essence, he has stated that he wants this country to spiral down even further into the abyss, simply for the satisfaction of saying “I told you so.” That’s some expensive ego-stroking.

Does he even THINK about what he says? The convenient thing is that he doesn’t have to, as his “ditto-heads,” or whatever his fascist zombies call themselves these days, certainly don’t think about what he says.

Never mind that Obama wouldn’t be in this predicament if Lush’s buddy Shrub hadn’t gotten us into this mess in the first place.

These fascist ego-maniacal pundits like Lush and Coultergeist seem to make it their sole occupation to out-do their previous innanities. Oh, if only the Dr’s had decided that Lush “just wasn’t right” for those cochlear implants.

Limp bag can’t get his head out of his ass let alone make a real world and valid comment. Pretty much like the raapublican party’s grasp on reality. Which they have been struggling with recently.

Ahh fuck fritzy they are all fucked up beyond any recognizable value. So fuckeed up that there are’nt any words for this. And I do agree on your observations.

Hoffy where are you???????Hoffy isn’t too sensitive is he?

  6. ChuckA:

    ^ Fritzy…related to “Lush Rimjob”…
“Ooooh…COCHLEAR implants!…and all this time I thought they were saying…COCKIER implants!
I kept thinking: “How could ANYONE be more cocky than THAT fucking, born-again, rationally retarded blowhard.”

In my opinion, aside from, of course, Dubya and some of his rationally tone-deaf cronies, “Lush” has gotta be one of the, ALL-TIME biggest (literally) assholes in the history of this country.
    [If not...the known Universe?]
Even Coultergeist would probably refuse giving him a blowjob.
    What’s that?…Too late?…
    She probably already has?…and what?…
She lives under his desk?

Are these people never satisfied? They basically stole the show with all their praying and “so help me God” oaths and hands on the friggin Bibles and “God bless America” shouts, but still they want more. Were it up to these bigoted asshats there would have been guards at the inauguration preventing atheists from even attending the services.

They’re liars and promoters of hatred. In the AOL article link Rev. Cecil Blye is quoted as saying, among his other ludicrous statements:
a disproportionate number of “black kids are dying each day through abortion. President Obama is supportive of abortion, and that’s a genocide on black folks. Nobody wants to talk about that as a civil rights issue.”
These people hate atheists and free-thinkers so much that they are willing to sink so low as to accuse Obama of genocide. GENOCIDE! How warped is this?
(In fact thirty-seven percent of abortions occur to black women, 34% to non-Hispanic white women, 22% to Hispanic women and 8% to women of other races. — from http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html )

This is more than just whining and boo-hooing. I could handle disappointment and jealousy. No, this is a calculated attack against all of us who value free-thinking, truth and justice.

    Jimmer,
I remember reading in one of Hoffy’s comments that he was going back to school for a change in direction in his career. With his clinical psychology experience, I doubt he’s “too sensitive”. He is likely just extremely busy and hasn’t the time to read much more than his academic courses require. I imagine he’ll be back when time allows.

  9. Lynda:

I just noticed I made a typo on my email address and my comments are “waiting for approval”
Here they are with the correct email address….

Just my way of letting Hoffy know he’s welcome here anytime. I was missing his stream of consciousness comments.

The religious who feel that we non-believers do not merit mention are just showing their insecurity. Sheesh you’d think that we were gonna tell them that their god doesn’t exist or sumpin. LOL

  11. Rob:

I wonder if anyone else catches the stealthy, though probably unintentional, slight to atheists by calling us “non-believers”. To the religious individual, we are seen as somehow lacking in understanding. Maybe it is just my pet peeve. I like Pres. Obama, but he believes in the same invisible man as Bushy. I think it is clear that Americans will never elect anyone but a god-in-your-face xtian.
