Porn in the USA

2 March 2009 by Stardust

This sort of goes along with KA’s latest post below. Despite how they profess that their God hates pornography, Evangelical Christians just can’t seem to control their sexual lust.

I found this at American Atheist’s Nogodblog.com

Conservatives Love Porn!
“8 of Top 10 Porn-Consuming States Voted Republican in 2008 Presidential Election”

A new study shows that the states that consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption.

A new nationwide study of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

“When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

“Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by,” Edelman says.

(It was noted that less porn was sold to church-goers on Sunday.)

Some of the States with rather low porn consumption yet strong neo-con “values” (like Montana) just don’t have their Internet “tubes” hooked up yet. Poor ‘ol boys have to whack it to printed magazines or videotapes.

Ha, who didn’t see this one coming?

I watch porn too, so now there’s something us blue and red states can agree on!

  3. Krystalline Apostate:

Thanks, Stardust. As Brian points out, this is no surprise @ all.
I would in fact, find religion culpable in these behaviors, because almost all religions try to squelch the natural impulses of the human being, leading that person down the road to repression, & in some cases, actual deviances & harmful behavior. Dahmer, f’rinstance, was raised in a fundie home, & look how HE turned out.

Absolutely no surprise, regarding this. Religions are all based on self-delusion and lies…dishonesty and hypocrisy flow naturally from completely suppressing natural urges. Having grown up Catlick, I remember going through terrible bouts of guilt and shame after reaching puberty for even THINKING about sex; wondering whether I committed a “mortal sin” and needed to constantly go to confession. What bullshit and ultimately outrageous foolishness religion perpetrates on the human race.
IMO, the constant denial, tamping down and demonizing of natural inclinations creates a gradual buildup of self loathing, which often eventually manifests in self medicating drug and alcohol addiction. The subsequent lack of rational control may then lead to all manner of more serious, even criminal, behavior.
The old, impossible: “Be ye perfect as your Daddy in heaven” bullshit wreaks havoc in so many lives. One is “NEVER good enough, smart enough…and doggone it!…you’re STILL a dirty, filthy, shameful, born sinner; who deserves to be punished forever in hell…”
…”But SHE loves you!”…? [Pardon a little twist on the old Carlin line?]

No surprise. Conservatives love kink just as much as the next guy; they just keep their kink in their sock drawer.

The Raving Atheist, (now called The Raving Theist after supposedly finding Gawd) linked to this post here. He’s comparing the purchase of porn to the consumption of kumquats.

Is the consumption of kumquats politically driven? There’s really no way of knowing whether it’s a “red” or “blue” thing.

His post diverts attention away from the fact that God bothering states purchase the most porn.

So even though it turns out that many of the biggest kumquat-eating states are technically “red” — Utah being No.1 — consumption in those states isn’t much different than in the “blue” ones.

This is what god botherers do. They divert attention away from the point being made. God botherers buy a whole lot of porn, while at the same time they protest against it.

As for those states not being much different than the blue ones, then why do we see more billboards, advertisements, porn shops, road signs, etc advertising porn in the red states? (One commenter actually tries to explain that away with “I haven’t really seen a whole lot of adult signs and bookstores”.)

I live around Chicagoland and it’s hard to find a billboard advertising pornography and porn shops aren’t readily seen. But just travel into the Babble-belt and they are plentiful, the landscape alone the freeway are dotted with ads for “adult entertainment”.

Then someone in the comment link diverts the discussion in totally other direction…yep, the ABORTION issue. They always pull that one out when their hypocrisy is brought up.

Raving theist has failed to explain why so many fundies love what their god hates most? Oh yeah…they pull out the “human frailty” card.

Did we ever figure out if this dude is really a theist now or just playing?

  7. Lynda:

On the left you have feminists who speak out against pornography. On the right you have religionists against it. They balance out. Republican males and Democrat males are pretty much on the same page…the center fold.

Who cares? He’s just an asshole one way or the other.

    LOL…True.
